Rehoboth isn't cheap, especially in June and July. With the hot sun tempered by early summer breezes, and both Washington and Baltimore just three hours' drive away, it's a natural destination for city dwellers looking for a beach at the weekend. And it doesn't disappoint: the beach is clean, well managed (lifeguards every 100 yards or so), and long enough to cater for everyone: singles, couples, families with kids, gays, gay families with kids, you name it. But as I said, it isn't cheap, and we made the mistake of economising. The going rate on the web for bed and breakfast was $140 a night, but we found a guest house for $105 just a block from the shore. The Summer Place looked great in the picture: freshly painted, personally managed, big and clean. But in this world, you get what you pay for. The reality was that the decor was tatty, the king bed in the room was actually two twins shoved together leaving hardly enough space to walk round them, the air conditioning was a noisy box under the windown, and the shower was a prefabricated plastic cubicle. There was no breakfast on offer even if we'd paid and maid service was by request only; though to be fair, a parking permit was included in the relatively low price. Rehoboth has a lot to offer: for harassed parents needing a break, the funfair and the endless fish, fries and ice cream joints are a godsend. For those not encumbered by keeping a family entertained, there are plenty of classy restaurants and alleys full of art galleries and craft shops. But you'll need to spend a bit, especially on accommodation. There are many boutique hotels and guest houses downtown which look well maintained; read the descriptions by all means, but in the end go by the price: with such a big market within reach of such an attractive spot you're not going to find a bargain. We'd go again, but next time we'll have a little balcony overlooking the boardwalk and the ocean: that's what Rehoboth is all about, whatever it costs.
