My best friend and I visit Rehoboth often, and in the past we have always made a point to go to the Big Fish Grill. The seafood is always super fresh, and the crab cakes are not to be missed. However, after our visit today, we may have to find a new favorite restaurant.
The poor economy seems to have hit the Big Fish hard. I always get crab cakes in one form or another, as theirs are truly out of this world. In the past, a crab cake sandwich from the lunch menu ($12.95) was about the size of a large, thick hamburger. Today, I ordered a goat cheese salad topped with a crab cake ($16.95). The crab cake was the size of a small scoop if icecream, and the salad was nothing but a heap of lettuce with 1 slice of cheese. Definitely not worth $16.95. When I complained, the manager tried to tell me that the crab cakes have always been the same size, 3.5 oz, a bold-face lie. She offered to take it away and bring me something else, so I ordered my usual, the crab cake sandwich, hoping that the tiny cake I'd received was just because it was on a salad. Not so. When the sandwich came out, the crab cake was just as small as the one on the salad. I ate it, but I was not happy, and when I mentioned it to the waitress, her answer was, "Maybe you shouldn't order the crab cakes." Seriously?! My friend got the tuna cheesesteak, and they skimped on the filling in that too.
I understand that food prices are going up and restaurants are being forced to cut back just to stay in business. However, the prices at Big Fish compared to what you get has become ridiculous. And even that I could have tolerated if the manager had not outright lied to me about the portion size being the same as always. Although I still love the seafood at the Big Fish Grill, after this experience, I'm not sure I will go back.
