Let me start by saying the Avenue Inn is our go-to place. We have always LOVED it there. Staying there is a family tradition with my husband's family- he's been staying there for more years than I am allowed to say! Unfortunately, our recent stay was less than stellar. We had to come down to Delaware on short notice due to a death in the family. The Inn easily accommodated our late-night-early morning check-in, which was greatly appreciated. We ended up not checking in until after 6 a.m. My husband asked if it was possible to do a late check-out and explained why and just received a flat "no" (and, lets face it- not every room is the first one to be cleaned and turned over for the next day- one room certainly has to be last!). Now, if that is their policy, that is fine, despite our extenuating circumstances, but a little compassion, an "I'm sorry", just a little politeness would have gone a long way, given the circumstances ( I really think, despite what we told them, that they thought we were looking for time at the beach, as they told us we could use the chairs and leave the car there- we were actually just looking to lie down for an hour or so after going to the funeral home). As it was, we were in by 6:30 a.m. and out by 9:30 a.m.
The minor inconvenience of the early check-out palled in comparison to the issue with the room itself. We had a room with two beds. My husband selected one, pulled back the spread, only to find a stained, yes, STAINED blanket on the bed. Obviously, we couldn't even sleep on that bed, so thankfully, there was another bed in the room, but we really expect better of the Avenue Inn. I should mention that we were at their Avenue 2 location, and it was, in general, not as nice as the main hotel, but still, for the expense, one expects the place to be clean. And, stained bedding is just unacceptable. In the bathroom, there was rust around the shower head, some mildew above the shower, issues with the ceiling tile- little things that could easily have been fixed, but weren't, but again, these were all minor issues compared to the STAINED blanket on the bed.
I'm hoping we just caught the Inn at a bad time of year, as we have always simply loved this place (see my prior review). Normally, I just can't say enough good things about the hotel and the staff. This visit, however, just did not live up to the Inn's typical high standards and exceptional service.

First I want to say that I am sorry for your loss. I am grateful for your continued business and that you chose to stay with us again. I feel confident you will indeed stay with us again as you know things have not really changed at the Avenue. Our desk staff would never tell a guest simply "no" when a late check out is requested. It doesnt happen, ever, we always explain our policy. We do offer late checkouts when it is an option and it will not interfere with the next guest being able to have their room ready by our guaranteed 3pm check in time. When we have a guest moving from one room to another, as in this case, then a late checkout is not an option as we accommodate the customer that is staying over with us.

As for the stained blanket, I agree this is unacceptable and I apologize. I have reviewed the issue with our manager and we are taking the steps to be certain this does not occur. As you have experienced what we are capable of from your past visits I know you are aware that this was a one time incident.
