The boardwalk in Rehoboth Beach is exactly one mile long. The wider commercial section is at the north end centered on Rehoboth Ave. There is a band stand with free live music many nights in season and lots of typical boardwalk entertainment like a small amusement park, arcades, junk food and shops galore. This part can be crowded especially on weekend nights with a mix of locals and tourists, families, couples, singles, you name it. On weekend and holiday nights there can be too many teenagers hanging out for some people’s tastes but overall it is safe and reasonably civilized, save one or two jerks when it's really crowded. There are enough police on the boardwalk to maintain order at all times. Rehoboth Beach is a very gay friendly town so you will see quite a few gay couples, occupationally holding hands. If this bothers you, better skip Rehoboth.
The south end of the boardwalk fronts private homes and is a quiet, beautiful and charming walk anytime but is a particularly welcome break from the throngs when downtown is crowed.
