My husband and I were in town on Thursday, September 2nd. We happened to grab dinner at Grotto's on the boardwalk & went for a stroll down the boardwalk after dinner (around 8pm). We stumbled upon the Rehoboth Beach Film Society showing a movie at the bandstand as part of their FREE summer Cinema by the Surf series. We were drawn to the bandstand since we heard Michael Jackson music being played. It ended up being a showing of Michael Jackson's This Is It. We had only missed maybe 15 minutes of the movie and decided to take a seat. We took a seat at one of the many white benches that sit in front of the bandstand & face the ocean. They had a pretty large screen set up under the stars. The picture quality was pretty good for a temporary screen that gets taken up & down. The sound was amazing. We almost felt like we were at a live Michael Jackson concert even though it was just a movie. The atmosphere was very family friendly.
Overall, we enjoyed the FREE movie under the stars. It was nice to sit out under the stars & watch a movie with the ocean breeze blowing through our hair. It was really relaxing. People really seemed to enjoy the movie. They were singing, dancing and clapping to the music. It really felt family friendly! It it also nice that you can grab a snack from one of the MANY boardwalk restaurants or food stands & enjoy it while you are watching the FREE outdoors movie. The only downside is that the benches can get a little uncomfortable after a few hours. But, for added comfort--you could probably bring a blanket or beach chair & sit in front of the wooden benches. I would definately watch a movie at the Cinema by the Surf again. You can't beat the price. Too bad it is not offered ALL the time. Check their website for details on movie times & specific showings.
