“Small Room, Big Furniture, Very Cramped”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 11, 2012 via mobile

We have wanted to stay at this oceanfront Victorian hotel for years and finally did. In season rates ( summer) are about $400/night, which is spendy for a 4 story hotel that is showing its age. The location is its greatest asset, right on the boardwalk on a broad stretch of beach. You can walk to restaurants, bars, shops and amusements in town, all within a few blocks. We were able to have breakfast outdoors on the beach level, which was a delightful and treat on a unseasonably warm November day.

The decor throughout the property is heavy-handed Victorian. Our room, while having ocean views and the welcome sounds/rhythm of ocean waves to sleep by, was crowded with big furniture (and too much of it) ... So much so that you have to turn sideways at the foot of the bed to cross the room. The bed was high off the floor, and the ceiling was low, making the bed uncomfortable to get on or off, and adding to an overall closed or tight feeling in the room. The bathroom, too, was very small.

We enjoyed the location but not the room. For future stays, we'll go back to our favorite place in Rehoboth Beach, the Bellmoor.

The best thing about the Boardwalk Plaza is its location fronting right on the boardwalk and a short hop from the restaurants and shopping of the main drag (Rehoboth Ave.). The Boardwalk Plaza has an excellent restaurant, Victorias, fronting the beach. Twice in November the morning was warm enough to take breakfast at Victorias outdoors, essentially on the boardwalk, with excellent people watching and views of the beach, once including dolphins passing by. The hotel has taken its Victorian theme fairly far with charming results in the lobby and the restaurant. Among idiosyncratic features, several parrots are permanently housed in the lobby and the parrots can frequently be found loose on the shoulder or hand of the staff working behind the desk -- a bit disconcerting depending upon how one feels about close contact with animals. Friday and Saturday nights, at least in November, the hotel has hot spiced apple cider and cookies in the lobby among the Victorian furniture and decorations -- a lot of fun. The staff is friendly, helpful, and frequently an older employee of long standing. If you ask, you can have your choice of newspaper outside your door each morning. The rooms are attractive, clean, well maintained, but a little cramped.

We stayed for one night and wished it could have been longer. We had an ocean front room on the concierge floor. It was beautifully decorated and spotlessly clean. Everything was provided for our comfort. Towels were fluffy and bed was comfortable. Nice snacks in the bar and very reasonable. We didn't want to leave!

I was here for a conference overnight.
The hotel decor is like taking a trip back in time. The woodwork, antiques, even the parrots in the lobby...picture perfect!
It is very clean...Service was excellent and every one we came in contact with was pleasant and helpful.
Had an ocean front room. It was very nice. Had a small sitting room with desk, TV and sofa that opened onto a balcony that faced the ocean. It was the perfect place to see the sunrise over the ocean. And the plus was having a perfect autumn day to be on the beach.
We had 2 queen size beds that were very comfortable and lots of pillows.
They provide you with a Kuerig coffee pot and real mugs, not styrofoam cups.
Small touches in the rooms make a difference. Even the towels were soft, absorbent and they were colored green...not the basic white.
We ate breakfast, lunch and dinner there and all the food was very good.
The summer prices are obviously very high, but being there after the high season, rates are reasonable.
It was so nice, we will be returning in December for a little weekend rertreat, and Christmas shopping at the outlets...
They are open all year round...

Room Tip: Definitely get an ocean front room if you can afford it

I just returned from 2 nights at the Boardwalk Plaza Hotel and it was wonderful. My friend and I enjoyed every minute we were there. We ate breakfast there and all the food was good. The location is great, and the room was very clean. The beds were very comfy and the room was well decorated. We plan to return next year.

I run trips for retired military officers. My driver, a former chef, picked this hotel for its style, location and apparent amenities. Visiting in late September on a perfect weekend, we were perfectly delighted with everything about it, from the first steps into the main lobby right off the boardwalk, to the charm of the Victorian decor, and mostly, the top notch manner and service of every single employee we encountered. Our group of 14 was early arriving, but the staff got us into our rooms right away. Baggage was carried with graciousness, for those with walkers and assistance given to our lady in a motorized chair. The rooms were long and thin, allowing as many as possible to have an ocean view. Some slanted toward the ocean from the side, and others were directly facing the ocean.

The place was clean, all employees wore crisp uniforms, decor was very pleasing. The beds were moderately firm with well covered with quilts. The ocean view (side) and ocean front rooms had a small fridge; all rooms had Keurig coffee makers. Suites were especially nice, with a modest but useful sitting room with couch. Room service included a rose on the tray.

The pool area right off the boardwalk had chaise lounge chairs for sunning. A roof top area included a jacuzzi. We didn't have time for the gift shop but it looked nice.
The restaurant was a little pricey but very good and so convenient to have it there, with excellent service. A pub offered a slightly different menu. Amenities included a packet of local information and sights. This hotel is two blocks north of the main street, and so easy to walk to all the little shops up Rehoboth Ave, including places to rent bikes, etc.

We loved this hotel and will plan to return every year. It was a real find, classy and comfortable, with such great service, if that is what you are interested in.

Room Tip: Singles have no view of the shore, but if you don't plan to stay in the room then who cares...

We have stayed at this hotel numerous times before. Though the Victorian decor is a but much and a little to "fru fru" the hotel was always well maintained. We chose this hotel after several bad experiences at other hotels in Rehoboth and this is sill the best hotel directly on the beach. (stay away from the Atlantic Sands - it is a DUMP!) The staff is generally friendly and helpful, requests are handled efficiently, the restaurant and pub are good and have good service. The pool area is small but more of a hot tub experience rahter than a full blown pool. We always stay on the adults only concierge floor which has additional amenities.

We have noticed that the hotel seems to not be keeping up with maintenance as well as they used to. On this trip we could not close the balcony door, the lock was broken. We called maintenance and they cam right up but the first one said he was just a part timer and that this was a job for the regular guy. Shortly after this the other maintenance man came up and was better able to handle the problem, however, he said that the track is worn and this makes the door level drop. Obviously it seems that it is time for a replacement. The refrigerator/mini bar was not working and was warm. This was fixed, but then we discovered that there was a half consumed bottle of wine left from a previous guest. We reported this because we did not want to get charged for it. The staff was nice about it but admitted that there was no excuse for the warm fridge and something half comsumed - someone fell down on the job. They give complementary bottled water, but we had to drink it warm for the first da by the time the fridge cooled down. There were a lot of other little maintenance issues: There is a telescope in the room, but it was rather loose and rickety an kind of faling apart, in fact, a weight fell off and almost fell on my foot which could have been a painful injury. The hook on the back of the bathroom door fell off because it was loose, the small vanity miror was loose and wobbly, the TV remote did not work, several lights did not work. We got to the point where we just got tired of calling maintenance and since we were only here for 2 days this time we just made due. The bathroom needed caulking especially around the tub where there was a dirty black (mold?). Someone just needs to go through and caulk, and bring a screwdriver and tighten things up. I understand the Victorian decor, but the hotel is in need of a makeover, the carpeting needs replacement, the balcony is dirty and the balcony railings and exterior wood is in desperate need of repainting (paint peeling and faded) The elevators interiors and floors need to be replaced and updated. It is still a good hotel, but things are lacking as far as maintenace goes and they need a makeover. The hotel seems clean, but in todays world the trend is away from thick heavy bedspreads, heavy drapes, decorative pillows which are difficult to keep clean and fresh especially inbetween guests, in favor of more crisp clean linens and less heavy window treatments

The hotel has some good amenities - especially on the concierge floor and free WIFI but for the concierge level (complementary bottled water and a Kuerig coffee maker) but they should offer a complimentary continental breakfast, snacks and beverages throught the day as other better hotels in Rehoboth do.

I wll be back and love the covenience of being right on the beach, but if the decline continues, I will have to look at other options even if it means giving up the convenience of being right on the beach/boardwalk.

Room Tip: If you don't have kids and are looking for more quiet, choose the concierge level. They also hav...
