Owner description: Learn to ride the waves at the Delaware shore's only boarding school. This is a great way for individuals to experience the beauty of the ocean and Delaware beaches; however we're more than happy to accommodate larger groups, such as families of all sizes, wedding parties and friends!

“Would not recommend”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed May 7, 2013

July 2012, I bought two - 2 hour group surfing lessons for my teenage children. Initially, I called and scheduled a date and time for the lesson, met the surf instructors at Rehoboth beach where I was told to go, then we all travelled to the State Park (where you have to pay to get in) only to have the instructors take one look at the beach and waves and say that it wasn't the right conditions for the surfing lesson that day. OK... I can deal with that - although I took the day off work and got up at 7am with 2 very excited teens to do this. I was told by the surf instructors that someone would contact me later that day to reschedule.

Several days later - with no call, I called the surf school. I was told that I just got missed on the call back list and they were sorry but they were booked and I should call back in a couple of weeks. I called back only to get the same response - "call back we are booked". Well, on the 3rd call, I was told that it was now close to the end of the season and they could no longer accommodate my children. I paid in advance for these lessons...No refund was EVER given although I was promised one. I continued to call several times and left messages, as well as send an email with no further response.

I will never attempt to book through this surfing school again. I have told anyone who even suggested that they might want surf lessons not to contact this school and will continue to share my story with co-workers and friends.

“Even with the smallest wave, we had an awesome time!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 12, 2012

My friend and I bought vouchers for the Rehoboth Boarding School for a 2 hour group lesson through one of those daily deal websites for a very good price. After having a bit of difficulty scheduling our lesson (book early), we set it for the last Saturday that the voucher was good for.

We met up with our group at the north end of the boardwalk on a beautiful warm August morning. We signed the waivers (that's how you know you're going to have fun!), and piled into a couple of vans that had a really cool surfer-vibe, helped by the reggae that was being played. After a 15-20 minute drive, we arrived at our destination (which changes by the day, based on conditions). Our spot of the day was the north side of the state park at Indian River Inlet.

We left all of our things in the van for security, grabbed boards, and took the long walk from the parking lot to the surfing spot. Here's the thing - I was afraid that we'd spend half the day talking theory and form on the beach rather than trying it. I was definitely wrong. We spent 5 minutes at the most talking about the unwritten rules of surfing, another 5 on form, and we were paddling out. The instructors had us paddle out beyond the breakers and wait. Two at a time, they would call us up to meet them in shallower water and wait for the right wave. They stood by us, watching the breakers, waiting for the right wave. When they saw the right wave, they'd instruct us when to get ready, when to paddle, and when to stand. Even though the waves were small, we were exhausted by the end of the two hours. We had plenty of riding time, and at the end of the session, we were given the chance to surf a bit without assistance.

I felt like, during those two hours, my friend and I improved a lot, and we had an amazing time, especially for the price. Even if we payed the full price, it would have been worth it. Now I'm trying to find a cheap beginner's surfboard ;)

“Consider a private lesson”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 12, 2012

If the group lesson contains people of wide abilities, don't go with a group lesson. My just 9 year old son's lesson was terminated because they were concerned. I had proactively told them my son has Aspergers, and he might be nervous or say inappropriate things. He was doing great, but he was the youngest (others in the group were 14, and 3 40ish women). He needed extra help not because of the Aspergers, but because he wasn't as fit or confident as the others in the group. I am still waiting to reschedule or have a refund after several attempts to contact the school via email and phone.

“Totally Radical, if Conditions are Right”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 5, 2011

We really enjoyed our surfing lesson onthe day we could actually have it. We didn't appreciate in advance how dependent on the weather and conditions that lessons would be. I was hesitant to pay in advance for the 3 lessons, but relinquished when the owner told me that they typically sold out weeks in advance. Imagine my surprise when everyone else paid after the lesson on the day we went. I got over being forced to pre-pay and was excited for my next lessons... But they never happened. Conditions weren't suitable the rest of the week. We (again) were surprised because the waves were huge as we chilled on the beach - but maybe they're too big for beginners. All in all, Peter is a consummate professional and is very good to deal with. Be prepared for ambiguity in scheduling and a few misses if the weather/waves aren't cooperating. But if you can deal with that, the experience is great and the instructors are fantastic.

Pete and his instructors are awesome. My dad and I have been going for years and he is one of the best, most fun instructors I have ever had. He is a great teacher and really knows his stuff. And he doesn't just teach to you and send you off. He gives you tips and ways to better your surfing.

Without a doubt, one of the best instructors I have had in anything.
