“Authentic Italian but Could be Better”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 1, 2012

This is a large Italian Restaurant in Newark DE area (in a shopping center outside of town) with an extensive menu of traditonal and not so traditional Italian specialities. It is not inexpensive. The tomato sauces are outstanding. The egg plant parm not so good (soggy mush). But you have a lot to choose and service is friendly and good.

“Delicious”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 24, 2012

Everything I have ever eaten here is delicious. Portions are appropriate, you don't leave with a huge pile of leftovers, but you do leave stuffed!

“Overrated and Overpriced”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 31, 2012

Been here 2x and both times was only because i had a groupon - the food was decent but nothing special and the prices are ridiculous for the amount of food you get and the quality. Chicken Saltimboca was overcooked and dry - sauce was good but chicken basically inedible. Salsicca & porcini app was very good, slightly overpriced for mainly a plate of beans with a little mushroom and sausage but one of the best things I've had there. Dolce vita is a joke - good luck finding the specs of steak medallions in it. Rack of lamb had a very good flavor, although the seasoned bread crumbs were soggy as opposed to being seared and creating a crust. In additon the hack job on this thing was awful. Each chop was a completely different size it looked like they cut them apart with a bread knife and the overall portion was not what you would typically get for a $25 rack at other restaurants. Their homemade gelato is awesome though! PS - their "take out" place is a rip off - i went to get an order of burrata from there and they said it would be $12, to just get a ball of burrata to go. Funny because the restaurant (5 feet away) was selling it for $10 - so I could get it to go from there and get bread for less money.

“So sad”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed January 5, 2012

I was really looking forward to going back to Casa Pasta, which had been closed for renovations after a fire. But the first thing I noticed on my return was a hefty raise in prices. Even worse, there were a host of up-charges on the menu. For instance, fish is now served "nuda." For $21, you get a piece of plain fish, potatoes and vegetables, or pasta with tomato sauce. Well, if that's what I wanted to eat, I would go to Captain's Catch, buy a half pound of king salmon, and steam it in the microwave. But to get any sauce on your fish, you need to pay between $3 and $7 extra. Same for pasta. Anything other than plain tomato sauce runs you $3 to $5 more. I hate being nickel-and dimed.

But what goes up definitely doesn't come down. Since I don't eat meat, I asked the waiter if I could have the pasta with filet mignon tips and shiitake mushrooms without the steak for less than the normal price of $20. I thought he was going to have a coronary. "We don't charge less for leaving items out of dishes!" he screamed at me. Well why not? You certainly charge more for putting extra items in.

I ended up with eggplant parmigiana, which was very good. The food at Casa Pasta is quite good, which it should be for what they charge. The service is another matter. After his initial volley, the waiter continued to be loud, but in a jocular, pushy, self-disclosing way, as if he didn't understand the difference between providing service and speed-dating. I felt rushed and rattled. I was particularly dismayed to find out, after the meal was over, that while he took time to grade our entree choices up or down and to share his personal menu preferences, our waiter had not bothered to disclose that in addition to salmon and tilapia, branzino and cod had also been available. Too bad, because I certainly would have ordered one of them.

So I left a little sad that what had been a dependable Newark dining option was now in the "iffy" column. There's more to a good meal than good food.
