“Excellent Courtyard”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 27, 2012

Very nice hotel! I was there for meetings over a weekend. The dinners that we had there as part of our event were delicious. I would highly recommend the stuffed chicken breast and the salmon. Our waiter, Greg, was amazing! He provided very attentive service. The hotel staff is personable and prompt. The breakfast buffet, included in our room rate, was very good. It included the usual assortment of continental breakfast items, but made to order omelets were also available.

This is a wonderful looking hotel with some excellent staff members but has some underlying issues.

The hotel is comfortable and like said above, the staff was excellent. The service at the restaurant was excellent and friendly. The food is tasty and again the staff was quick and attentive. The check-in was quick and painless and buying things from the market was easy and quick as well thanks to the front desk staff.

There are a few issues however that one would not expect from a Courtyard or from a smaller town. First, the room has the sink outside the bathroom, which is a bit strange but apparently it is easier for people to use, but I think most are used to having the sink within the bathroom. Second, the wifi in the hotel is decent, but weak and unreliable. They have free wifi, however it is through a third-party and requires hitting the "Ethostream" webpage to authorized prior to using the internet. The signal is weak and spotty through-out the hotel, which is a bit of an issue. Also, the plug within the room does not connect at all, but does work.

The other issues included no in-room safe. This was an unexpected issue as one would think a hotel like this would at least contain an in-room safe. This left me a bit concerned. The last MAJOR concern is the fact that Newark is a smaller town, however, with the free shuttle from the hotel to major locations and businesses, it took the shuttle driver more than an hour to locate my office and pick me up. Now the office is about 7 miles from the hotel and the company has a working relationship and corporate rate with the hotel, so one would think they would have a knowledge of the location. The shuttle drivers use no GPS of any kind and the vans are pretty worn and beat down. The vans have "Check Engine" lights on, belts squeeling, etc. and this is not something to expect from this hotel.

All in all .. ok stay, but I would be on the fence about returning on my next visit. Also note that there are several trains in the area that blare the horn at random times during the evening.

Room Tip: WIFI is weak on the 4th floor

Sincere thanks for your feedback on our hotel and services. We place a high value on all guest comments. Since your stay, we have taken action to upgrade the wi-fi signal strength in our hotel, and free and fast internet is vital to all Marriott Courtyard travelers, this should not be an issue going forward. Your experience with the shuttle is unfortunate, as the driver admitted that he was lost, and since then has many successful trips. I also reviewed the condition of our three vans for local guest service and you will see much better conditions in the future. We will look at the possibility of room safes as we conduct future renovations, but we do offer safe deposit boxes for use of guests for valuable at the front desk.

Thanks for your excellent comments on our dining options. We do look forward to your next visit to Newark!

Chose this Courtyard for its location and stayed two nights while visiting relatives. Overall a good experience. I thought it was a touch pricey, but I suspect the University location and meeting facilities support the price. I was disappointed that the restaurant closed for the lunch period. The front desk staff was not especially attentive at check-in and seemed to be distracted with other chores.

We appreciate your feedback on our hotel and thanks for your business. I apologize for the inattentive attitude of our staff at front desk, that is unacceptable and we will use your comments as a training tool for all of our team. Our pricing is competitive in the local market, and we do offer special rates for families at holiday periods. Let me know the next time you are coming, Bill Sullivan, billsull@udel.edu. I understand your comments about lunch and while we do offer a 24/7 market that is not the same. Also ask our staff at front desk as there are many convenient dining options in Newark.

We look forward to your next visit to Newark.

This is a superb hotel. Well appointed, great staff, best crab cakes ever eaten. I have reason to visit the area regularly and the consistency of the service is commendable. Good sized swimming pool and reasonable gym.

I took my kids to visit family in Newark this past summer. We had flown 4 hours, then drove for 3 hours so we were very tired and weary. We arrived at night and were so grateful that the check in process was quick, simple and professional. The rooms were quite comfortable, quiet and provided everything we needed. Enjoyed breakfast , could however have had a bit more variety.
Our server was very courteous and pleasant . Nice place overall.

Stayed here with two teens during a college visit to University. Very attractive lobby and rooms; liked the outdoor seating off the lobby. Also appreciated the flexibility of breakfast with some low calorie breakfast sandwiches that could be ordered at their counter in lobby along with other options, or the breakfast buffet at a reasonable price. Is on the edge of the Delaware campus and very close to center of town where there is shopping and dining on Main Street. Staff at reception very friendly and helpful. Highly recommend.

Sincere thanks for your kind comments about our hotel’s staff, service and food offerings. I hope your child has selected the University of Delaware, and we would be pleased to be your “Newark” home for the years of college! Your comments on the food offerings at the lobby Bistro are most appreciated and exactly what Marriott had in mind for this food concept.

We look forward to your next visit to Newark!

Stayed here for a conference/workshop and have not seen another Marriott anywhere with customer service better than this Marriott. As a Marriott's reward member who has stayed at numerous Marriott's of all levels, this one is #1 or #2 in every catergory. The customer service should be a symbol of how all hotel staff should interact with customers. Every staff member greets you whenever they see you, every need is anticipated and met. I couldn't find one single thing to complain about in this hotel except the water cooler in the gym didn't work. That was it.
