“historic yet luxurious”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 9, 2014

Lovely setting. This is a restored old village, complete with cobblestone streets. Parking is a block or so away from the old houses which contain the rooms. I suspect this would lose its charm in the rain or snow, or if one had limited mobility. But on the sunny early spring of our visit, it was quite lovely. The amenities are excellent and the service is friendly.

Two nights in our charming 2-bedroom cottage with cozy sitting room proved to be a special getaway. Careful and thoughtful service included nightly turndown, complimentary water & sodas, and use of the large and comfortable gathering room in the main building. The staff is eager to assist with information and reservations for the local attractions, that include the fabulous Winterthur Museum just minutes away. Be sure to dine in Krazy Kat's just a quick walk down Privy Lane -- I recommend the scallops. (Note: Stairs are required to / from / within the cottages. When wheelchair and other handicap accessibility is important, contact the Inn to determine if available.)

We enjoyed a long weekend in the Brandywine Valley. We stayed in the "Draper" suite located in an old house used by workers of the historic Dupont gunpowder works. We enjoyed the atmosphere in the small village. The two-level suite featured a narrow, authentic, stairwell to the second floor. The suite retained many of the original features of the house; yet was outfitted with a nice gas fireplace, a TV on each level, refrigerator, microwave, and a well appointed bathroom with many amenities. Yes, the house fronted to a street but noise was not really an issue. The reception area in the main building looked like a great gathering place for larger groups or families. We had breakfast at the "Krazy Kats" restaurant that was delicious. The Inn was located minutes from the excellent Winterthur museum, the Hotel Dupont for fine dining, and blackjack at Delaware Park. Also worth visiting in the area is the Hagley Museum and Longwood Gardens. Why not five stars? The staff was average and we would have appreciated more explanation of the history of the property. Overall a very good experience.

I stayed here on a business trip in January during a nasty snowstorm. The room was very nice and well-appointed. The restaurant, Krazy Kat's, was lovely for dinner and breakfast. The gym was a really nice surprise.

Room Tip: During the winter months a room close to the restaurant or main inn is your best bet. Some of my co...

I was impressed with each and every aspect of this lovely inn. The rooms were beautiful and well appointed. The bathrooms were large and luxurious. Prices were right on target. The grounds and gardens are beautiful and lovely to stroll around in. I also really loved the restaurant on site, Krazy Kats (silly name, great place!) Overall, I would come here again and recommend it to friends.

The Inn at Montchanin was everything we were hoping it would be. From our warm welcome in the converted barn with it's honour bar & snacks in front of a roaring fire, soft jazz playing in the background, to our fabulous meals at Krazy Kats, our stay at the Inn was magical. Can't wait to return!

This place was incredible. The room had every amenity ever thought of. I never wanted to leave. I could have easily lived there for 2 weeks! Nobody ever bothered you--I think that this is what rich people like. There was no tipping. They have a fantastic restaurant--Krazy Kat's--that has won every award that a restaurant can win. This is the very best place to stay when touring the wonderful Brandywine Valley. There are so many attractions there--Longwood Gardens (THE BEST IN THE WORLD!), Winterthur Museum (probably the best collection of American artifacts ever assembled--very Downton Abbey--American style), and Hagley Museum--where the DuPont family brought us the technology for gunpowder.

Room Tip: If you want to save money and you only have 2 people who want separate rooms, choose Chase and Fell...
