We stopped by here for some lunch after a day on the beach. Outside it smelled heavenly. You could smell the grill at work! We took a seat at one of the patio table sets outside & were given menus by the waitress. She was back in a few minutes for our drink orders. After looking over the menu, we decided on the "best burger on the bay", fish & chips and the kids chicken tender meal. Our meals were out to us within about 15-20 minutes. The service was kind of slow, especially since it was not that crowded when we were there. It seemed like there was only one waitress on duty at the time as well.
We all thought the food was pretty good. My husband loved his fish & chips. He said it was really good. I thought the burger was good. It is not the "best burger" I have ever had, but it was decent. One plus is that it was still juicy even though I ordered it well done! It was cooked perfectly. The kids chicken tenders were OK. Everyone enjoyed the fries. They were really delicious. Prices were a tad high, but the portion sizes were pretty large.
While we dined, we had a great view of the bay, lighthouses (Delaware Breakwater & Harbor of Refuge) and the ferry going in & out of port. It really is a pretty view. Plus the dining area was decorated really nicely with big pots of colorful seasonal flowers & lots of shade producing umbrellas.
After dinner we decided to try our hand at a round of FREE mini-golf offered behind the Bar & Grill. It is part of the Lewes Ferry terminal & free to all visitors. They provide the golf balls, golf clubs and scorecards in exchange for a driver's license. It is a cute nautical themed 18-hole course. They ask that you do not putt the final hole, but return the ball to the front information desk instead along with your putters. When you return your supplies, they give you back your license. It is not the most elaborate putt-putt course, but it is worthwhile....AND you can't beat FREE!
In addition to mini-golf there is a kid's playground on location (right beside the mini-golf). I believe it had a few slides & some monkey bars. We did not get to take advantage of it while we were there since it was being re-painted. However, just know that it is there in case you want to let the kids burn of some energy before bed/nap-time. There is also a kids arcade inside the ferry terminal.
Overall, we had a good dining experience with On the Rocks. The food was all pretty good. The portion sizes were large and filling. Service was a tad slow, but not terrible. Most of the prices were average for the area, but could be a little cheaper. I think the hot dogs were way overpriced at $7.50, but they were selling A LOT of them that day (maybe since it is the cheapest "entrée" on the menu?). I am not going to complain considering the FREE mini-golf & playground that are available at NO additional charge. PLUS, You can't beat the view. Whether at the terminal for the purpose of riding the ferry OR just visiting the towns of Lewes/Rehoboth, I would recommend On the Rocks. I would eat here again...and I rarely ride the ferry! I think it is a great option for those seeking outdoor dining with a view. Would be pretty at sunset.
Note: Indoor climate-controlled dining available inside the ferry terminal at the cafeteria/bar. Restrooms are inside the ferry terminal. FREE parking.
