We stayed at The Highland Drove on a Saturday evening in June. The location of the pub, in the lovely village of Great Salkeld was perfect, over-looking the village church. Parking was a bit of a problem, as it is on-street on a very narrow lane. The room was fine, very small but with a lovely bathroom and big shower. Very little room to put anything down, just a little chair and very small cupboard, but we were only there for one night so it wasn't too much of a problem and it was all clean. Oh, and there was no milk for our coffee in the morning!
We had booked a table in the restaurant for 8pm but were advised that we could eat earlier, if we wished. We decided to do this and were shown to a lovely table in the empty restaurant, over-looking the balcony and garden. After 5 minutes, we were asked to vacate this table, as it had been reserved, and were seated at a wobbly table slap-bang in the middle of the room. Neither of us liked the table and, as we had made the booking 5 months earlier, felt that our reservation should have been for one of the tables overlooking the garden. We asked if we could move and the manager came over and was quite rude, asking what the problem was. We explained that we didn't like the table and he, grudgingly, allowed us to sit at one of the window tables. We were a bit shcoked at his attitude, but he then came over and talked us through the menu, the wine list and that evening's specials and seemed a lot friendlier.
The food was absolutely lovely and a very reasonable bottle of pinot noir at £14 was perfect.
The restaurant was pretty full but our young waiter was very friendly, chatty and attentive. It is a shame the same couldn't be said for when we were in the bar of the pub! I appreciate that village pubs have to rely on their local customers but each time we went to the bar, it took ages to serve us and it was very obvious that locals were given priority. Just a small gripe but one that felt quite big at the time!
Breakfast was good and overall we really enjoyed our stay but it would have been improved if the welcome and service had been a bit warmer and friendlier.
