“Even better the second time”

The Addy Sea

May 20, 2008

We stayed at the Addy twice, once last August and this month.

The staff is great as is the food. Breakfast is included and if you can wait 'till they serve at 9 am you won't regret it.

You cannot beat the location right on the beach. The boardwalk and downtown restaurants are a five minute walk.

We loved our room both times but the last (#7) was the best, it sits looking out to the sea.

Bed is as comfortable as any Marriott!

I took my best friend to Addy Sea in Bethany Beach, DE for an early birthday/Spring Break/girl's getaway Off-Season vacation. We stayed in Room #7. Other than the room being quite small, we both enjoyed the king sized bed, jacuzzi, and nook with with the most fabulous view. The decor was quaint and Victorian. Unfortunately, as we visited during the off-season, the property was undergoing some slight construction- they were rebuilding the beautiful front porch. The prices are rather large, but the prime location is the reason. The ocean is literally right there, and waking up to it is a great way to start the day! I would love to visit The Addy Sea again this coming summer but cannot bear to shell out the 400 dollars a night for such a small room.

I should also mention, the staff was very friendly while checking in and out. We didn't see much of them other than that, but at the same time we did not need anything from them.

“Beautiful bed and breakfast”

I stayed at the Addy Sea with a group of women for a weekend sewing retreat. The breakfasts were really good and the manager was very flexible with providing areas where we could sew. The manager also had good restaurant recommendations. I read the tripadvisor reviews of the Addy Sea and took the Addy Sea's virtual tour on its web site before I made my reservations. One of the tripadvisor reviewers had noted that Room No. 10 was the best room. Room No. 10 is the best room. There are large windows in this room which give unobstructed views of the beach and ocean. The room is large with a seating area in front of the windows, a high vaulted ceiling with a large ceiling fan, a comfortable king-size bed, wireless internet connection, and a tub/shower/jacuzzi in the large bathroom. Saturday morning we saw hundreds of dolphins swimming in the ocean. I have to say that was one of the highlights of my trip. I would definitely stay at the Addy Sea again.

The location of the Addy Sea is what demands a premium rate, but that's about it. We were booked in "the best room" (#10) per the woman who took our reservation, and although the room was comfortable, I didn't feel it was worth the $160/night off-season rate.

The room was very small but had a great ocean front view. The bed and linens were soft and comfortable but the decor of the entire hotel is incredibly outdated. Imagine Victorian done 1970s style. The wallpaper was outdated, dirty, and peeling in every room we saw and the bathroom looked like it hadn't seen an upgraded fixture in 30+ years.

Breakfast was tasty but we had to wait 15 minutes to get a table. Service is from 8:30 - 10 so everyone rushes to the breakfast room...unfortunately there aren't enough tables for all the guests. We weren't sure of the protocol for breakfast and assumed some attentive hostess would offer us coffee and danish while we waited...alas, it was not to be. We loitered around the parlor with two other couples, also not sure what to do, until a table became available. Then, in the absence of a proper hostess, WE had to awkwardly explain to another couple that we were also waiting when we saw them jockey for the newly vacated table ahead of us. All this for $160/night!

Apparently the Addy Sea is booked solid all year round - you'd think with that kind of income they would invest in an interior upgrade. Only then would I consider coming back for those rates.

We just got back and found this to be a very nice place. The breakfasts truly are gourmet! Beach chairs, towels, bottled water and soda are available all day, and made beaching it very easy. The staff were very nice and accomodating, but do not expect crisp professionalism.

Just a couple of notes that the website doesn't share - room 11 has a beautiful huge bath but does not have a shower, the website's description of the crew's quarters room's "private half bath" is a bit of a stretch to say the least, and securing valuables is a bit of a problem (but, why are you taking valuables to the beach in the first place?).

We'd stay again, but I'd get room 10: top floor, quiet, GREAT beach views, king bed, full bath with shower.
