“Valentines evening”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 16, 2013

We went to the oak on the green for a valentines meal. When we arrived we were taken straight to our table, there were heart shaped balloons all over the place, candles on each table. A lot of the tables were already occupied and there was a pleasant atmosphere. There was a set menu due to it being valentines day, each course had a varied variety of dishes, I don't eat to much meat and there were 3 vegetarian options for the starter and main, the main meal of portobello mushroom burger, chips and salad was delicious, my other half had the ribeye steak and chips. The portion sizes were huge! Even my other half could only eat half. The set menu was 3 courses for £26.00 so we had dessert, the sticky toffee pudding and the vanilla cheesecake, again the portions were massive and the quality of the food was fab! The guy who waited our section was attentive, chatty and helpful. When we told him we had just moved to the village he went over all the markets, fairs and carnivals throughout the year and welcomed us to the village. All in all we had a fabulous valentine meal, great food and great company

“Victim of its own success”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 13, 2013

We've been looking for a place locally that offered decent portions for a reasonable price for some time, and I think we've found it in the Oak On The Green.

Went there for a Saturday lunchtime and had a couple of drinks and a burger each and paid under £35 for it. Decided to not bother with a starter as we saw mains arrive at other tables and reckoned we didn't need one based on the size of them. Portion size IS excellent (the burger was at the point of not being able to pick it up) and the quality superb. Proper chip shop chips, onion rings and a large side salad served with the burger really made a good mean great. Were asked if we required ketchup or sauce of any kind. Requested BBQ sauce for the chips and, unlike Beefeater, this (hot too) was delivered to our table free of charge.

Downside - Saturday lunchtimes are pretty quiet apparently (talking to the staff) but by the time we left (1.30ish) the place was pretty full and the tables are packed together so you almost bang elbows with the people on the next table. We heard that it can be bedlam on Friday and Saturday evenings and that booking a couple of weeks in advance is desirable. We plan on returning in a few weeks (to try their famous ribs) and I expect the place will be heaving.

The dining room part of the pub was a little cold, especially as we were sat by the french doors and although the car park was relatively large, we could have SOLD our parking space as we left for all the cars waiting to park in there. Not helped by the usual idiots who take up 1.5 spaces with their huge 4x4s or through lack of consideration.

But overall, top quality food served well and a decent tip earned by our friendly waitress. But I get the impression that if you like a quiet, intimate meal, this would be one to avoid. Or perhaps choose a Tuesday lunchtime or something.

“Quality and value..........a rarity these days”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 7, 2013

I was taken along with colleagues for dinner at the Oaks this week. The surroundings are quaint and traditional and the service professional and attentive. But by far and away the most impressive aspect of this restaurant is the food, closely followed by the value for money.

Ok so some of the dishes may come across as a little retro, prawn cocktail etc but for me that was a plus. My choice was nachos with chilli as an appetiser, appetiser with attitude , it was a generous start to the meal. Not only generous but damn good, tasty chilli, guacamole, salsa and salad leaves, and nacho chips, yum!

As for the main event, well , it had to be Rossini of course. My steak was stunning, rare to blue and again generous in size. Add to that a very tasty pâté and Madeira sauce to top it off, and some naughty chips to complete the dish.

The whole table of seven tried different dishes, from seafood to steak, there was nothing but praise for a very enjoyable meal. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the Oaks as a quality place to eat that doesn't make you wince when the bill arrives

“Don't go there unless you are desperately hungry”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 6, 2013

Just got back from The Oak on the Green and couldn't wait to write this review. The food there is absolutely fantastic. I had Chicken Fajita and it really is 'to die for' The prices are ludicrously cheap and the service was excellent. There is a very large free carpark behind. If it had 6 stars I would give it that !!

“Bland food, very disappointed”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed February 2, 2013

The verbose descriptions on the menu make every dish sound very tempting. However, my wife and I both decided to try the burgers for lunch which were tasteless and lacking any chargrilled flavour at all, the meat could have been of any origin. The salad accompaniment was similarly bland with half-ripe tasteless tomato and lettuce barely up to the standards of Sainsburys 'Basics' cheap salad. Priced at £11-95, it was a steal - from the management's side of the fence.
