“Best value for top-notch food in Westport”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 16, 2015

Great location on the river in Westport, I think this restaurant is the best value for top-notch food in Westport. The ranking for this restaurant truly does not reflect the quality and value of the dining experience.
Sometimes it can get a little noisy if you are sitting on the lower dining room which has the river view. The executive chef, Eric Sierra, is very warm in personally welcoming you to his restaurant when he is not too busy in the kitchen. It is rare to find an executive chef who truly gets his hands dirty preparing meals in the kitchen. Usually, executive chefs at this level of restaurant supervise the food preparations and the wait staff. Eric is much more involved and it shows.
If you are in the Westport area, try this exceptional experience. The food is as good as any of the top restaurants in town at considerably less of an expense. The wine list is limited but the selection is very good. If you like white wine, try the Louis Latour Pouilly Fuisse or the Joseph Drouhin Mersault.
We even had Mother's Day there and it was a great time. Many other restaurants fail to provide good service on such a busy day. The food was as good as usual and the service was great. Another great asset is Jean Pierre, formerly of Coline Verte. He never fails to deliver a great dining experience if you are lucky enough to sit at one of his tables.

“Rerereview”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 11, 2015

We finally decided to come back and try since last disappointed visit (even worse, the chef and owner wrote me a private note saying "get out of my place" after I expressed the bad service and food. However, I must say this time was extremely pleasant. I always order the same appetizer, grilled artichoke, that was divine. All the main courses including were complete spot on in terms of favor and texture. And the last but not least was the service, two gentlemen were attentive and knowledgeable about the food and drink. We are definitely coming back again. Only hope that owner and chef whose name is Eric could change his attitude and listen and accommodate what his diners would like.

“Not worth the price of admission”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 16, 2015

I've been too Rive twice, a year apart each time. The first instance was for a wedding reception. The food was pretty decent, but after sending back my filet the first time they managed to overcook it twice the second time. Passable I guess because there were 100 people, so I figured giving Rive a second chance. Went there again this past valentine's day. Though I didn't have the service problems other recent commentators posted, I was pretty annoyed to receive conflicting messages about the menu. I called to confirm the regular dinner menu would be, at least partially, available on V-Day and was informed it would be. Not the case. V-day not only was the menu fixed, but the chef refused substitutions of any sort (no peas for Brussels sprouts? ok whatever). However, the prices they charged for the food was not worth it by mile. The lobster bisque was uninspired and tasted/looked like something you would get from a can of progresso. The filet mignon, was $40 bones, should've been some ridiculous tender prime cut but I could've just as easily gotten the same thing from the local butcher for 1/4 of the price. The chicken, tho tasty, was dry in the middle and kinda flavorless. The one thing this place really has going for it is the ambiance, but for dinner and the amount we paid there are a ton of other inspired, flavorful, creative dishes elsewhere I could get w/o a snotty chef being too busy to substitute a side of peas. No reason paying this place a third visit

“From better to worse”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed January 28, 2015

We have been eating at the Riv for a while, and have been giving several reviews on tripadvidor. Unfortunately the manager doesn't seem to be aware diners' thoughts nor to be keen on improving any of their problematic services. The quality of the cooking is going down. For example, their signature dish grilled artichoke hearts was serviced cold and artichokes were small and lack of freshness. The mussels were all of sudden came with tomatoes sauce which was not even fresh, as it tasted from the can tomatoes. The quality of services were always an issue on the busy nights like Friday. The waiters waitresses are not informative or knowledgeable about what's in the house, especially the drinks and wine. There were more servers than needed, since many if them just stood there with no action.

“Second round fried French fries”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed December 22, 2014

We are one of those loyal costumers to Rive Bistro. And I have been contributing great reviews about this place for trip advisor. The artichoke salad and the mussel dish are all the time spot on. However, yesterday the French fries came with the mussels were soggy. Worse, we sent it back and it came back with refried dark fries. This completely dampened our enthusiasm for the whole meal. It's simply unacceptable for any top rated restaurant. I hope this won't happen again.
