5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 13, 2009

My wife, son, nephew, and I had a wonderful experience with the Dunloe. As my wife's mother lives in Ireland, we have stayed at several excellent hotels; including the Dunloe's sister by the lakes. This was our first time at the Dunloe, and it exceeded our expectations. It offers a wide variety of activities, yet had an air of calm about it. The staff was ever-present and helpful, but never "in the way". The boys enjoyed the tennis, golf, horse riding, swimming and fishing; and just wandering the grounds. The room was large, spotless, and inviting. It is set amidst a beautiful area away from the hectic pace of the town of Killarney. The Dunloe is a perfect place for a vacation (active or restful), and I would recommend it without hesitation.

This place is like a little piece of heaven on earth! Especially as a family with kids. The kids meals are the best we have ever experienced, not the usual chicken and chips, burger and chips. The spagetti bolognese is the best we have ever eaten! The ice-cream is home-made and it is delicious! A welcome addition is the newly done up swimming pool and spa area. My wife claims it is the best massage she ever had! Well done all in Dunloe! Thanks for a wonderful holiday!

We chose this hotel as the venue for our wedding reception and it couldn't have been better. The location and scenery were outstanding. The rooms were extremely spacious and luxurious. The entire hotel staff went over and above to ensure our day was perfect and that every need was met. Jason Clifford, the hotel manager, should be specially mentioned for his attention to detail and professionalism with everything. He and his staff both confirmed and exceeded the 5 star rating.
Hotel Dunloe Castle helped make sure out wedding day was perfect and we know all our guests enjoyed everything as much as we did.

I turned into the Hotel Castle Dunloe (HCD) and drove up a tree lined avenue. Initial impression - impressive. The hotel looks right onto the Gap of Dunloe - fantastic views of the gap.

The hotel had the swimming pool / sauna / steam room, a games room and fitness center. A spa available from its sister hotel nearby - the new Hotel Europe. (This hotel just looks fantastic - very modern if you like that look. We had a snack there and it was top notch.)

Back to HCD - it also had some little extras that you would not normally expect - horse riding, and fishing which I availed of. Also available were indoor tennis and all complimentary.

The food was good at breakfast with a wide selection - hot and cold buffet and your cereals and breads etc - the usual stuff.

Staff were great, especially the girl with the horses and the concierges.

The grounds of the hotel were very impressive too and they even had a playground for kids which was very impressive.

There was so much space for people to relax and unwind both inside the hotel and around the grounds. There is even a small castle ruin on the grounds - really cool.

However, I cannot say that it was all good. Some of the most important elements were lacking with the bedroom itself.

The bed in our room were Continental twin beds pushed together to form a double/king size bed - not the most romantic for a married couple. The receptionist explained that all of their rooms were like this except the EUR 600 a night rooms. He did offer to move us to another room where he explained they had some special sheet or cover to keep the mattresses together. But it was too late when we noticed it and we had already unpacked.

There was no tea & coffee facilities in the room. I would have taken this to be a given.

Also the TV was one of the old style TVs. It would have been nice to have a flat screen TV in the room - it is meant to be 5 star luxury after all.

The bedroom appeared outdated. Normally you'd think that the same interior colour scheme is used throughout the room - the curtains, the carpet and the bed spread. Our room had an eclectic range of colours where little if anything seemed to match. The lamps in the room were also old and outdated - possibly there since the 80s.

The bathroom was fine too - a few cracked tiles !

Unfortunately, nothing to give it a WOW factor.

I feel that if the key thing that I am paying for in a hotel is for the room, it should be right especially in a 5 star hotel. .

Some other minor points were:

The decor of mismatched carpets and curtains seemed to be throughout the hotel in general. It was more amusing than anything else. However, you couldn't fault their other hotel, Hotel Europe, for this - they definitely got this right. Interior decor is fantastic here.)

When I wanted to get on the net for a few minutes, the computer didn't work and incidentially it was at least 15 years old so it wouldn't have the capability for high speed internet even if it did work.

All in all, I thought that the staff were great and I was really pleasantly surprised with the horse riding and fishing. The hotel gave great peace and tranquility that the hotel offered and the spectacular views were second to none. I guess that the hotel is undergoing updating in stages as some parts were done to a very high spec but I got the impression that the hotel's face lift was at an early stage. I would recommend this hotel but I would prefer to stay at their sister hotel The Hotel Europe, the next time around.

All of the B&Bs and hotels that we stayed at were very nice and had both positive and negative aspects, however the hotel Dunloe Castle was one of our favorites. We loved its location near the Gap of Dunloe and Killarney National Park, since we hiked a lot, but also loved all of the ammenities that were included in the hotel (free horseback riding, tennis, swimming, spa services, gym, breakfast, and beautiful gardens). The staff were all very friendly and helpful and the hotel was beautiful and up to date. The breakfast was also great. Negatives were that it was a bit pricey to stay there, although you get a lot out of your stay, that there was no tea and coffee service in the room (although they did send us an electric kettle), and that the "king" size bed was two double beds pushed together, individually made (hardly acceptable for a romantic getaway). Overall, the positives greatly out-numbered the negatives.

Some hotels in Dubai characterise themselves as the world's only "7-star" properties. Well if thats the case then the 5 star Hotel Dunloe Castle needs re classifying. From the moment you drive along the tree-lined avenue against the magnificent backdrop of the famous Gap of Dunloe, into 70 acres of roaming beautiful grounds, you will know you have arrived in paradise.
We stayed there with 200 guests for our wedding who came from the UK, Ireland and America and each and every one of them have commented that the hotel combined with its warm and friendly staff made it the best wedding they have been to.
We cant speak highly enough of the whole experience, our wedding was so so fantastic and the venue and staff were a major contributer to that.
Much love John and Caroline
