“Not bad. ”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 4, 2014

Abigails is a good place to go either for happy hour or a sit down dinner. I've had good experiences and bad, so no five stars here. However, the happy hour pricing can't be beat, and sitting out on the patio in the summertime is great. They have an outstanding wine selection and great food. The service is either spectacular or terrible, depending on the waitstaff.

“Major disappointment”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed March 30, 2014 via mobile

Since we are new the area, we often ask locals for their favorite restaurants. Abigail's seems to be on everyone's list.

We went for dinner last night and, wow, it fell seriously short of our expectations based on the recommendations and the Trip Advisor reviews.

Our table was not ready when we arrived, so we angled up to the crowded bar to wait. Not a problem. The bartender poured a glass of champagne that was so obviously flat from the way she held the bottle upside down over the flute until it glugged out like lemonade. She never showed us the label for the bottle, so I am not convinced it was actually champagne. But she replaced it when asked. When she delivered the sparkling water, she demanded impatiently, "You want ice with that?!?!," after my husband did not hear her over the loud bar noise the first time. Hardly a warm welcome.

We were shown to a tiny table for two upstairs in a second half-empty bar area overlooking the busy stairwell and with a big screen tv directly on the side of us. The carpet smelled like it had not been cleaned in a long time and felt "sticky" under my feet. Yuk. We asked if we could please wait for a table in the downstairs dining area.

We were shown a much better table after a few minutes and our server, Matthew, was very pleasant and attentive.

We ordered a starter of French Brie to share. Our server had indicated that although the menu didn't say so - it was warm. When it arrived it had been warmed once, but was served in paper thin slices that had congealed onto some paper thin stale fruity bread and topped with a huge glop of cloyingly sweet tomato chutney. Not what we had expected at all.

The wood-fired fish entree was an improvement and, although the presentation looked a bit off-putting as Matthew had warned, the sea bass underneath was moist and delicious. The spinach and roast vegetables, though not large portions, were perfectly cooked and tasty.

The duck entree, however, received poor marks overall. It was so over-cooked that it was dry, chewy and tasteless. Our server graciously offered to replace it, but by then, the fish entree would have been cold or eaten.

Having had just a tease of cheese for appetizer, we opted for the cheese plate to share for dessert. We should have learned our lesson. We were presented a HUGE checkerboard-like plate with six TINY little pieces of cheese - some with rinds making up a large portion of the serving; a few more glops of chutney, 1 blackberry, 1 mashed raspberry and a handful of soft purple grapes. And a stack of more thinly-sliced, stale fruity bread. All for $20!

Our total with a glass of wine each came to $112.00. We definitely did not feel the quality merited the price.

Abigail's will not make our list of local favs.

“Wonderful food and great atmosphere in the Tavern”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 11, 2014

We love to visit the tavern upstairs. Prices are less expensive and the food is still delicious. There are also great food and drink specials during happy hour.

“Classic Home Town Favorite”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 5, 2014

Living in Simsbury, this restarant is our "go to" place for dinner. The food is consistantly good and the service above average. It's my mother's favorite when ever she comes to town.
