“The Perfect Stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 30, 2009

This hotel was extremely clean. The Group Saleperson, Manager and Staff were extremely polite, helpful and accomodating. This is hotel is luxurious, yet kid friendly. The buffet breakfast was awesome. You can dine in the hotel or at any one of the amazing restaurants within walking distance. Especially V ristorante - great food. I cannot wait to stay again.

I stayed here for a weekend with my boyfriend recently. It served its purpose quite well. They're renovating but it doesn't affect the rooms or lobby. The lobby is gorgeous, with a fireplace and flat screen TVs. My boyfriend had a Guinness at the bar and said the bartender was friendly- he opened a few bottles of wine for us as well. Rooms are spacious with free wireless internet that actually works. The sheets kept creeping off the corners of the bed throughout the night though, which was annoying. It's got a great location (right off the Merritt), and there's enough development around the hotel to keep things interesting.

Stayed at HGI Shelton in early October for first time. Plenty of easy parking, large welcoming lobby area. Checked in and was allocated a room and just as I was walking away from the desk, the receptionist said there had been a mistake with my room allocation and needed to change it suggesting that my rate code determined a certain type of room. I didn't question it and was given a new room and new key card. The room I had orginally been allocated was on a high floor overlooking the front parking lot and beyond - the room I ended up with was on the lower ground floor and the rear of the hotel - so gloomy than you need the lights on even on a very sunny day - and it was overlooking the garbage skips. Was the rate I was paying so low that they didn't really want me there? Anyway, I was only staying one night so didn't push the issue. I returned to the front desk about half an hour later to ask for some restuarant recommendations in the vicinity - I had never visited Shelton before but had driven past a couple of establishments on the way to the hotel and more were clearly visible from the front door of the hotel. The desk clerk seemed to scratch her head in puzzlement and then said, "Oh yes, there is one across the street that some of our guests seem to enjoy but apart from that I don't know of anything". Her next action then because almost predictable in that she produced a menu for this supposed "one restaurant in the area"!

Clearly there was some kind of 'commercial arrangement' lurking in the background - to be told there was really only one restaurant close by and then to have a stock of their menus was unacceptable. Guests should be able to speak to staff and receive unbiased advice - sadly at the HGI Shelton this was not the case when I could stand at the door of the hotel and see THREE restaurants in direct view!!

We always find the Hilton Garden Inn to be a reliable hotel. The rooms were clean and the breakfast was great (and included with our room rate).

My husband and I stay quite often at the Hilton Garden Inn in Shelton as we have family in Connecticut and this location is centrally located for us. This is not a hotel that I would recommend reserving for a lengthy stay, but for short business trips or for visiting family, it's perfect.

This is probably about the 10th time we've stayed here and it is consistently quiet and clean with good-size rooms and bathrooms. The bedding is always comfortable, towels are plentiful, toiletries are of above-average quality (for a hotel), the staff is always friendly and helpful and the breakfast buffet is actually quite good for free or for a nominal fee of about $10 when reserving over the internet.

The hotel is very conveniently located directly off of Route 8 and is close to a number of restaurants and stores now that the Old Route 8 (or Bridgeport Avenue) has been so built up over the years.

If you're looking for a good, clean hotel with very consistent standards, this hotel is a sure bet!

3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 24, 2007

I stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn for one night during a business trip, and was satisfied with the experience. First the good points: The hotel is clean, the staff is friendly, and the rooms are adequate. Good beds, free wireless internet, hot water in the shower,
and a free breakfast for being an HHonors Gold member.

The not-so-good: After working very late and getting back to the hotel at around 2pm, I was looking forward to sleeping late the next day in my room at very end of the hall. Unfortunately, the housekeepers must have been having a better morning than I was, since they all decided to congregate outside of my room and tell each other about how wonderful life was. Luckily, they dispersed after a few minutes, but by then I was too awake to do anything other
than get dressed and take advantage of my free breakfast.

Speaking of the free breakfast, it was not bad, considering that I usually don't eat most of the hot foods they feature (bacon, sausage,
eggs, pancakes, and other cholesterol-rich griddle faves). The fruit and bagels were fresh, and the coffee was plentiful. Bland, but plentiful. And the wait staff was friendly and happy (they must know the housekeepers).

If you are going to be in Shelton, I'd recommend staying at the Hilton Garden Inn. I'd also recommend a strategically placed towel at the base of your door in case the happy housekeepers come to spread joy outside your door.

  • Liked — Early check-in was accomodated
  • Disliked — Talkative housekeepers and thin doors
