“Bernard's & Sarah's Wine Bar”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 24, 2012

One of the top restaurants in the area. While Bernard's is a tad for the slower, older crowd, Sarah's Wine Bar (upstairs) has more energy - and essentially the same menu.

“Don't miss this”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 26, 2012

Bernard's has truly satisfying and inventive food, lovely service and a truly great pianist on weekends. Ask him to play Ellington. Oh and the wine list is outstanding.

“I love what they do!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 1, 2012

delicious innovative and fresh....and sincere, professional service... try the wine dinners.. Bernard's is the "go to" choice for a lovely romantic evening out.... & Sarah's Wine Bar, upstairs, is great for a more casual dinner, just a glass of wine and a small plate.. absolutely the BEST!!..

“Great food, nice atmophere”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 24, 2012

This is an old Inn that has been made into a lovely restaurant. They have a piano player and excellent food in the dining room and upstairs they have a lighter fare in the wine bar. A very pleasant place to go.

“Disappointing - don't bother going”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 1, 2012

We have been to Bernard's many times in the past five years since moving to ct. Most visits were enjoyable, though the last couple of visits were starting to leave something to be desired. Our visit last night WILL BE OUR LAST as it was thoroughly unenjoyable and nowhere near what it needs to be to qualify as even a "good" fine dining experience. The service was poor, taking over an hour to even be served our appetizers. We gave up after entrees, not even taking the chance of ordering dessert and tea, and still we were over two hours to have two appetizers and two entrees. We weren't drinking wine or alcohol so it's not like the service pace was altered to accommodate wines, etc. On to the food...the soft shell crab appetizer was good; from the special winter truffle menu, the ostrich egg appetizer was just ok and extremely small. For entrees, my husband's beef duo was just ok, luke warm at best and had a pretty tasteless sauce on it - the mashed potatoes were cold. My halibut was terrible - overcooked and dry. My initial thought when it was served was that it was a pretty small portion - the piece measured maybe two inches by inch and a half, and pretty thin. Definitely not the plump, yummy looking piece of fish that halibut usually looks like. My first was thought was, ok , better French dining often serves smaller portion sizes, so not a big deal in terms of the portion size. After tasting it, I was going to send it back given it was overcooked but felt bad that my husband's dish would then be either stone cold by the time he got to eat it, or reheated in the kitchen, neither of which were good options. After we had finished eating, the diners at the next table were served their entrees, one of whom ordered the same halibut as I had. There came the moment of clarity as to why my fish was so lousy and overcooked - the serving size the other customer was served was literally more than double mine - both in dimensions and thickness - and actually looked good! Cooking some little scraggly left over fish scrap the same amount of time as a regular sized piece yields a ruined piece of fish, a.k.a. my dinner! Throughout the night, Sarah was walking throughout the dining room talking with diners - fine to do if everything else in your restaurant is running as it should be but having a diner served a dried piece of fish scrap either indicates there are other things going on that need her attention or this is how they have decided to run their business. Oh well, we should have gone to Thomas Henkelmann, where the manage to get things perfect every time!
