“Don't judge a book by its cover”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 24, 2011

On the outside it doesn't look like anything special but the food is delicious! The service is also excellent. I've been here a few times and every time is great. Probably my favorite place to go to for Indian food. Do give it a chance!

“An extraordinary find: Exquisite Indian food in a bland storefront shop”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 22, 2010

One look at Star of India and you'll be tempted to keep driving. It's in a bland little building along a heavily used, boring-as-hell commercial road, and the interior isn't a lot better. Atmosphere isn't the attraction here.
But this kitchen can turn out some astonishingly excellent meals, and the staff is remarkably pleasant, efficient and engaging.
In years of experimenting with various Indian restaurants, I've come across Andhara Chicken only once - at the trendy, upscale Thali in New Haven. This dish is in a vague way similar to curry chicken ... in the same way that a Rolls is vaguely similar to a Dodge. They're modeled on a similar idea, but the execution sets them universes apart. Andhara chicken is a breath-takingly complex, delicate mix of exquisite spices and herbs, and Thali - known for top-shelf dining at top-shelf prices - makes it a specialty of the house.
So it's astonishing to find such a delicacy in the LUNCH BUFFET. But that's the sort of place that Star of India is: The buffet has unusual and adventurous offerings every day, and they've always been prepared marvelously whenever I've visited. This is a world away from the standard "chicken tikka, mild" buffet that's so tiresomely predictable in Indian restaurants. Star of India mixes up its lunch buffet, and really stretches with some of its menu offerings. The kitchen is fearless, and with good reason: These folks put out almost-as-good-as-Thali food at a fraction of the price.
The manager and waiters I've encountered are eager to talk about menu offerings, the history of the dishes they serve, the philosophy behind their remarkable buffet. They're unfailingly attentive and efficient.
So, if you're looking for a spot to impress clients or dazzle dates, keep going. But if you care more about the food than the decor, you're going to be very pleased with Star of India.

“Great Food - No Frills”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 12, 2010

There are all sorts of "boutiquish" Indian restaurants in the area (Thali in New Haven, Swagat in West Haven, two examples) that are really great and really unique Indian restaurants. This is not one of those places. Star of India takes the basics and does them extraordinarily well at really good prices. Everything we've tried on the menu has been really quite good. They have a really good mix between southern Indian and norther Indian dishes. They also have a few interesting dishes we don't normally see at your standard Indian places.

The staff could not be more friendly and welcoming. It's located in a pretty ugly part of the Post Road - don't go for the atmosphere. Just go for really excellent standard Indian food.
