“A million dollar view and a $5 glass of wine!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 1, 2014

I've lived in CT my whole life and have never ventured to B & T, even though my sister lives a few short miles from there. When making plans to meet with some long time girlfriends in Old Lyme, one recommended this place. What a gem! First of all, the staff were all fantastic. Upbeat and happy to accommodate. They had select wines for Happy Hour at $5 a glass and we strolled down the lawn to the river and watched the sun set and enjoyed the gardens and cool artwork. Then for dinner, they set up a table for 6 in the bar which was relaxed and comfortable. They had a dinner special which was $75 for a couple (each get: appetizer, entrée and dessert, plus a bottle of wine). That was an awesome deal! The bartender even upgraded our wine. The food was very good! What a gem of a place right in town! I didn't see the guest rooms, but the public space was fun, eclectic, and classic! All in all, a wonderful experience and I hope to go back soon!

Room Tip: Go on Thursday night for their Happy Hour/Dinner Special. Get there early and take a cocktail down...

We checked into the Bee, just off I-95 and were shown to our room on the third floor. There, over the four-post bed, was a chandelier with small red shades and a tassel hanging down. It cleared the bed by about...two feet, just over our knees.

So there we were, the two of us. No, the three of us, if you count the lamp. We learned to work with one another -- we've slept in a lot of tents and in a lot of sailboat berths. But we wondered...WHY is there a lamp swinging just over our knees? The room had other nice lamps. They were attached to things like the wall, the floor, and the desk. They weren't IN the bed.

The lamp must have been part of the art that fills the inn. Stuff like a lamp (another lamp!) covered with papier mache and gauze in the hallway. Pictures of priapic cacti and brussels sprouts in the parlor. A chair with seashells glued to it on the landing. A large British flag made out of glitter in the living room. Our lamp must have some deeper significance than just being a thing in the bed. After all, it had a dimmer.

Stuffy room -- authentic pre-A/C. Breakfast was excellent. The shower was weak, but then, the inn dates to the 1700s. A river flows nearby. You can't miss it: It's just past the two six-foot high cement conch shells set in the yard.

Room Tip: An old place -- no A/C where we were.

Honestly, I'm not usually one to bother writing TripAdvisor reviews, contentedly freeriding off the work of others. Yet my fiancé and I were so pleased by our stay at the Bee and Thistle that I am emerging from the shadows to recommend this delightful inn in the strongest possible terms.

Our room (Room 5) was comfortable and bright. The absence of a television for us is a positive feature. It is at the top of the staircase so you could hear some noise until about 10:30 pm or so, but this was not a problem for us. The complimentary cookies provided before bed were also extremely delicious.

We very much enjoyed our dinner in the restaurant as well. The menu was inventive, the service was attentive, and the wine list appropriately expansive without being overwhelming. The desserts were also off the charts.

The grounds are beautiful, and are best enjoyed with a glass of wine or cocktail from the bar!

Finally, I want to thank the staff, particularly Linnea the proprietor and the general manager whose name I have regretfully forgotten, who went far beyond the call of duty to make our stay a comfortable and welcoming one. As a gay couple, we were welcomed not just warmly, but unquestioningly--which is an even better feeling, and a quite uncommon one.

Thank you for an excellent weekend! I very much hope to be coming back soon.

My partner and I had a lovely dinner here with two of our friends. From the moment we walked in the staff were welcoming, warm, and professional. We had reservations and were shown to our table immediately. The menu was small, which is a good sign -- they do EVERYTHING on it well. The chicken liver first course was divine and the "clam cakes" were delicious. The beef filet for the main course was OUT OF THIS WORLD. It literally melted in your mouth. The atmosphere is fantastic, too. A lovely old New England mansion turned into a 10 room B&B. Will most certainly go back again soon.

Very quaint. Rooms clean and well decorated. No tv or radio. Our room was warm and cozy and we enjoyed talking and having a snack in our room (we brought our own). Then we dressed up for dinner and went down stairs and took a little tour. The house was a little chilly but the staff started fires in the fireplace and that helped. We had a yummy crab cake appetizer prior to dinner at the bar. It was crispy but melt in your mouth good! Jack the mixologist entertained us with drink recipes and stories along with another couple. The Inn was not full to capacity it being a Thursday and a very snowy day, but we enjoyed it. We enjoyed meeting the chef as well as the Inn Keepers, and wonderful staff. All were friendly! ( the bird was not)

Room Tip: OUr room was spacious and had a view of the beautiful Chestnut tree. The shower in our room was awkw...

We spent a lovely afternoon at Tea and the food and excellent choices of Harney Teas were just right. Our waitstaff was very accommodating. We were serenaded by the most wonderful, friendly harpist - sat by the fireplace, watched the snow fall - and hated to leave.
