Zen Namkhan Boutique resort was very nice. calm and quiet natural place.
We have been there for 2 weeks. We have been very happy with the management and service.
Everyone was very helpfull. it is 15 km from Liang Prabang but you can go to waterfalls and elephants camp or kayaking by the Namkhan river.
We thanks a lot Moon and Khamsand for the beautiful stay.

Zen Namkhan Boutique Resort was perfect. From the very first encounter with the charming and gently attentive staff, who offered a delicious fresh welcome drink and a warm smile, through the delightful surprise of finding a natural pool equipped with little fish, to the walk through the tropical gardens to the cool, breezy villa overlooking the lazily flowing river, all was as it should be. I loved the gentleness of the ambience, the calm quiet of the jungle surrounding us, the morning birdsong, and most of all the friendliness and genuine care for our comfort shown by our hosts Luc and Moon and their extremely efficient concierge Khamsaen. The room was very comfortable, with a verandah overlooking the jungle and the river equipped with chairs and plenty of cushions. It was a perfect place to spend a restful hour before evening drinks at the bar in the central meeting area, which was open on all sides to the gardens, and cooled by slowly moving ceiling fans. The food, again served in the central area, was delicious, every meal, whether western or Lao, a triumph, the kitchen being supervised by Moon who, apart from being an excellent organiser and a charming host, is an accomplished cook! Activities at the resort can be as active or as relaxed as you like. The staff cheerfully arrange for us a trip to the local waterfall, an elephant ride in the jungle, and visits to local weaving workshops. My stay was crowned by a massage at the resort's Japanese-style bath house, followed by Japanese tea served in a tiny cup beside a gently tricking waterfall, an experience that left me floating and perfectly at peace with the world. I came away from Zhen Namkhan relaxed, refreshed, and determined to go back.

Zen Namkhan Boutiqe Resort

Idyllic. For those who love nature and the natural world. From our first view of the lake-like pool edged with pebbles and natural vegetation, we knew we had arrived at a special destination. Our welcome drink was cold fresh papaya juice, which we were offered whilst seated on the open upper veranda of the restaurant. Our room did not disappoint. A wooden decked, reed roofed house, with a large veranda area, near to canopy tree height, ran its full circumference, views of distant mountains and the Namkhan River showed through the trees. Tropical bird song and jungle noises surrounded us. The impression gained was of a comfortable, beautifully designed tree house. The rooms are large, the bathroom tasteful with a rain shower. Our room was open to the jungle at the top, the front of the room glass doors looked out over the jungle. Outside on the balcony two comfortable seats and a table plus two lounging cushion covered sofa areas, invited us to sit and look at the view. Our room was cooled by a ceiling fan, unused as we were visiting at a damp cold time of year just at the end of the rainy season. We both wore our fleeces every night.

This resort is for people who want to experience unspoilt natural jungle, its sounds, smells and inhabitants. Insects, butterflies and small jungle inhabitants abound, if you do not appreciate these creatures, do not stay here. The eco swimming pool is fascinating, one of the most picturesque we’ve seen. The water is from the mountains, oxygenated by waterfall and by spraying water onto the surface. Plants and small fish live in the clear water whilst the deep base and surrounding pebbles are covered with natural life giving algae. The steps lead from a wooden Chinese style dock into the pool. The small fish nibble your feet as you stand on the steps.

The menu is quite small but the food excellent, the fresh and crispy spring rolls the best we have ever eaten. There is a good choice of wine available also.

The staff could not have been more helpful and genuinely seem to take pleasure in their jobs. The owner, Luc was away during our stay, the manager Moon, concierge Sam Send and copain were fantastically helpful and friendly. Nothing was too much trouble and we were beautifully looked after.

On our last night we were upgraded to a river view villa. It was simply beautiful. The views of the mountains and the river were simply stunning. Elephants from the nearby camp could be heard trumpeting occasionally from the river.

The resort has it all, within 20 minute walking distance through the jungle to the next resort with another good restaurant, and another half an hour to the elephant retreat with its local restaurant and seating area over the river with the elephants below.

This was a very special experience in Luang Prabang.
A bungalow on stilts with a 10 metre long verandah overlooking the NamKhan River. Set on a natural hillside.
No tuk tuks, no motorcycles, no touting for business. Just a beautiful serene environment with the occasional boat heading up river to the Tad Sae falls. A walk away was the Elephant Village and the local school.
Walk down hill and you reach the Japanese bath house, walk up hill to the infinity pool and the bar/dining area.
Great staff, great service, great food .. wine, beer, etc.
This was place to relax and enjoy the Laotian country side.
The staff will organise anything that you want to do. Boat trip to the falls, a day out and about or simply making it easy to relax by the pool.

This is a place to relax and be close to nature. Not locked in a sterile hotel room with the air conditioner going. But laying in bed in the morning, watching the sun come up through a wall with all of the shutters open.
Or sitting there at sunset. Enjoying a wine or beer on the balcony. Watching the butterflies and birds. Then walk up the hill to dinner ... it is a walk ... but under a canopy of trees or up stairs winding through the garden.

If you are the Holiday Inn type, want to shut out nature, shop in the market every day, be surrounded by traffic and tuk tuks this will not be for you. If you have trouble with spiders, moths, geckos, lizards and all sorts of harmless insects .. you should choose somewhere else.

But if you want a very unique relaxing quiet country experience this is it!

Room Tip: Bungalow with a River view gives you real peace and separation. A Bungalow closer to the pool means...

Our family had a memorable visit at this small boutique resort. The staff is friendly and attentive. The rooms are gorgeous, spacious, and clean. The owners and management have created a peaceful ambiance with natural pool ("fish spa" is available if you let the small fish nibble your toes), Japanese spa, gardens, serpentine paths, views of the mountains and river, and nourishing food.
Located outside Luang Prabang, minimize your need to go into town; stay and enjoy this resort. However, there are plenty of options for hiking and other trips from the resort if you desire.
There is a reading, game room above the restaurant and access to the internet from the office. Relax, read, swim, soak, sit on the porches. The restaurant menu has enough variety to satisfy your appetite many days.
We traveled with our 9 year old daughter who was easily entertained with the pool, games, Japanese spa, and menu. This is a fine boutique resort for people who want peace, forest, natural setting, views, and comfortable accommodations.

My husband and I booked our 3 night stay at Zen Namkhan as we were encouraged by positive reviews on Trip Advisor. Unfortunately, only hours after dinner at the resort on our first night, my stomach was in agony and I was violently sick with vomiting and diarrhoea for the whole night. This was not ideal given that there were only swinging saloon-type doors to the bathroom so my poor husband had to put up with the sounds (and more) all night and neither of us slept a wink!

We had been waiting a while for our meal the night before, and after politely asking them when our food was coming, we had been offered complementary raw vegetarian spring rolls which I assume must have caused my sickness. We are both vegetarians so I can only assume that there was a hygiene issue rather than undercooked food. My husband explained the next day that it would be better for me to be moved to Luang Prabang town as I would have access to medicine and simpler foods for my stomach but he was met with much resistance, as we had pre-booked the 3 days and they were not keen on us only staying (and paying for) one night. After a lot of insistence, they finally agreed, but they were clearly disgruntled as I had to personally go into the kitchen to find Moon, one of the owners, to say goodbye!

Possibly what was worse than getting sick, I did not get the feeling of a spirit of service and compassion at the resort and therefore felt compelled to write a review. There were a number of things that were not up to scratch about the resort which I was more than willing to overlook before this incident happened.

PS If you do decide to go, take a torch for the journey to and from your rooms - practical tip!

Dear Guest,

We are very sorry about your illness when you stayed at our resort. Stomach problems are common when you travel, especially in countries like India and SE Asia and it can be very difficult to pinpoint exactly where the stomach problem originated. Some bacterial intestinal problems don’t show up for several days.

We try to offer the best help we can if one of our guests is sick, but we are not doctors. The only thing we can provide is medicine to relieve stomach and intestinal problems or aches and pains if the client needs medication.

You give us the opportunity to reconfirm our procedure regarding food. First, we assure you all the food we buy is fresh and comes either from our biological garden or from the market. Vegetables are washed with fresh water or peeled. All our kitchen staff must wash their hands regularly. We clean the kitchen every day and disinfect it regularly. We wash the dishes outside the kitchen. The kitchen must be spotless as we give cooking classes.

Because I eat the same food I serve to my clients, I am particularly strict in these procedures and I can assure you I don't make any compromises on the quality of the food. We take seriously the responsibility to provide our clients total satisfaction with the service and the meal we provide. If the client doesn’t like his or her meal we take it back - like the wine - without any discussion.

Even after more than 10 months I can remember your stay with us last November and at that time there were several other guests who ate the same thing as you did and no one else got sick. That night we had an Asian set menu. For the appetizer we served fresh spring rolls and for the main course vegetarian yellow curry. Other guests had the same curry with pork, chicken or beef added. And there was dessert.

I can assure you if I believed any of our clients became sick because of our food we would not charge them for accommodation. You came to the resort late in the afternoon. We gave you a superior room and you were very satisfied with the cleanness, the sheets, bed, the view, etc.

That night you were the only one to get ill and we are convinced it was not because of the quality or cleanliness of the food at the resort used your illness since none of our other guests had any problems after eating the same food as you. It is possible that something you ate at lunch or breakfast problem.

Again we sympathize with the problem you had at our resort. If we had any doubt it was our fault, you can be assured we would have given you your accommodation for free...not out of compassion but because we take the responsibility to provide our customers with the best service and to make their stay with us as happy as possible.

Note: The door in the bathroom is French Colonial – and we had light on the path way. Thank you to help us to improve our resort..

It was a very peaceful place to stay in family. The staff was helpful, and pleasant. We have learnt so much about the country through the staff 's stories. We enjoyed the organic and environmental friendly touch: swimming pool without chlorine, organic tea and beautiful smoothies! The rooms were exquisite and we loved the atmosphere! Travelling with your 4X4 was a hit with our children! We would love having a LandRover where we live here in Australia.
