I stayed at Blu Be a few years ago, and it was one of my fondest memories of visiting Port Elizabeth. I suspect it was rather new back then, because I can recall crisp white linen and modern, simple decor lines. So, for a recent business trip to Port Elizabeth I decided to go back. And what a disappointment. Firstly, I do not appreciate being told to get the keys for the guest house from the petrol garage near by. It causes a very impersonal and cold reception. I'm a South African, but I am appalled to think that an international guest has to get a key from a nearby garage. Secondly, nothing is as crisp as I remember it to be. It is amazing to me how these types of establishments think that a sea view is good enough and good service is not required. The bathrooms of two of the rooms that I could get access to (me and a colleague stayed there) does not have extractor fans / windows. The are no hairdryers in the rooms, which I also find really difficult to understand, as this is not a luxury or expensive item. When I asked for one I received a broken one, and I had to use the owner / person there's own personal hairdryer. There is some serious cleaning needed - especially the window pane on the staircase has not been dusted / cleaned for weeks. The wi-fi password provided did not work. The balcony door of my colleagues' room could not lock. At breakfast there was a minimal variety with a glass of milk to put on the cereal, not even a jug. One jug of watered down juice was provided and we did not even bother to order hot breakfast as the service was so bad. The tables were not set properly and there was no one seeming to take responsibility for serving us at breakfast. When we did meet the owner / person working there, we were told about her computer problems and how rough her week has been, which I really felt was out of turn, not even asking how we were, or whether we need anything.
The sea view is beautiful indeed and the location is good. I would however not stay there again - as the place really need to "freshen up", especially in terms of hospitality, service, making people welcome, cleaning and really putting in some effort to serve a half decent breakfast.
