“A Hidden Gem”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 13, 2010

I stayed in Manor 38 in January, when i was taken to my room and executive room, it was lovely, very comfortable bed, and the most helpful staff, it had a lovely pool and patio, and i sat on the patio sunning myself all afternoon, it was bliss. Its only a couple of miniutes drive from The Boardwalk, a shopping and restaurant haven.
The room was large, with a fab bathroom and amazing shower. In the evening i was brought a glass of sherry and a lindt chocolate, which was a lovely touch.
The breakfast was served in a lovely dining room, and i have to say, was like dining in a michelin stared restaurant, it was lovely, with fruit, brought to you, and a full cooked breakfast, to die for. This place is a complete hidden gem, and i wouldnt hestitate from staying again.

We simply cannot say enough about the wonderful experience we had Manor 38 late November 2009. Marelise, the hostess, and Christopher, concierge, are so professional yet warm. They provided an exceptional accommodation experience during our 3 week wedding and honeymoon trip in South Africa.

Marelise included such thoughtful touches including fresh flowers and rose petals to our room since we were on our honeymoon. The sherry cordials at bedtime were another special touch. It made our overall experience so romantic and memorable for us both.

Breakfast was superb and made to order. We wish we could have stayed longer. We recommend Manor 38 without hesitation to anyone looking for a very special accommodation in Port Elizabeth. The ambiance and staff make it truly a gem!

We spent two nights at Manor 38 at the start of our 2 weeks in South Africa and I would recommend anyone spening a bit of time in the area before heading off down the Garden Route. There are some game reserves within driving distance and we spent the full day there at Addo which is will worth a visit. There also looked to be plenty of other things in the area aswell.

Manor 38 was very chic from the deor in the communal areas, to the rooms and to the breakfasts. We stayed in Room 1 which was very spacious and beautifully designed and we had all we needed. This was the best four star accommodation we stayed in and the only reason we could think it wasnt 5 star was maybe as there were no balconies. It certainly felt like a 5 star place.

Summerstrand to the south of Port Elizabeth was also a safe area, without the high fences arountd the houses in the area that we saw in a few other places in South Africa. We have no worries walking back from the restaurants 15 minutes away at night. Summerstrand seemed like an upmarket area to us with some great 30s properties in the area.

A great modern hotel with luxurious fittings and nothing too much trouble. Close to beach and restaurants at the waterfront.

2 of 5 stars Reviewed October 12, 2009

We stayed here just one night after arriving on an evening flight from the Kruger. I'd booked it thinking it would be a good and luxurious bridge as we moved to our next stage of the holiday.

The "executive suite" was plush, with spa bath, plasma screen TV etc and we were looking forward to enjoying a couple of luxurious hours before going out to eat. Sadly, before the bath was run, the lights and plugs power went out. Despite my and the owner's attempts to see what had thrown the circuit breakers for our room and other parts of the guest house they stayed out and calls were put into an electrician. We ended going out to eat early (which defeated the point of having a luxury room).

When we got back the lights were on. The "mini-bar" in the room was, though, virtually empty - one bottle of beer and a miniature of something or other. I went in search of the owner and a bottle of wine but drew a blank, which was annoying as I'd driven to the restaurants (some distance away) so hadn't had a drink!

In the morning the breakfast was good, but when it came to settling the bill there was no gesture of any description to make up for our spoilt night - a reduction on the bill or a bottle of wine the night before would have been appreciated. I decided not to argue the point but certainly won't be going back.

Our lasting impression was that this was like staying in a show home and the "people side" had been forgotten - unlike virtually everywhere else we stayed in South Africa.

We spent only one night at this wonderful gem in the rather uninspiring city of Port Elizabeth. Manor 38 oozes style and is beautifully managed by a very attractive lady (I didnt catch her name). The breakfast is also very stylish and is top quality. If we happen to be flying out or into Port Elizabeth again, we would certainly return to Manor 38.
