“Outstanding!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 26, 2012

This is the kind of restaurant you would find only in New York! The food is terrific with an elegant presentation. We know all the restaurants in the area (Mystic, Stonington, Niantic, etc.) and this is the best. Very classy!

“An unexpectedly delightful find”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 22, 2012

My husband and I were looking to kill a couple of hours between the end of a school soccer game and the end of a school dance, so I did a quick search for area restaurants where we could both dine in casual attire and linger over a good meal. Gaspar's caught my eye and I liked the menu on their website. Having gone to college in New London in the '80's, I was a bit wary of heading to Bank Street, but was pleasantly surprised at how the area has changed in the ensuing decades. Gaspar's is a little west of the hopping "downtown" area, but they have their own small parking lot, and there are lots of spaces on the street. The restaurant area is small -- perhaps 7 or 8 tables -- and there was only one other other couple there. There was a larger crowd in the bar, which is around the corner and not visible from the main dining area.

The decor was pleasing. Wood paneling with Tiffany style lamps, white tablecloths, lots of space between tables. They served water with a slice of lemon. The only thing that was just standard was the bread -- a decent enough foccaccia with an olive oil/balsamic vinegar dip. The food was truly AMAZING. We tried the appetizer special of roasted yellow beets with gorgonzola cream and a pistachio viniagrette with watercress. ($9) It was so delicious I sopped up the last drops with my bread. The meals were equally outstanding. My husband had the herb crusted local cod with lobster bouillabaisse ($18) and I had the pan seared scallops over a vegetable risotto ($20). We both agreed that the portion amount was perfect and the flavors exceptional -- avoiding a common restaurant error of overdoing meals with heavy sauces.

Since we still had an hour before the school dance would be over, we decided to stay for dessert and coffee. Normally we split a dessert, and had planned to try the chocolate mousse based on a TripAdvisor review we had pulled up on the i-phone. However, the management came over and sold us on the cheesecake mousse with the ladyfingers and strawberries. So we ordered both desserts and didn't regret it for a moment.

Gaspar's has only been around for a few months, so you may find a few glitches, as we did. The glitches were so minor that I mention them at the end and still give them five stars so that you won't hesitate to try them. The temperature when we arrived was very cold. Perhaps a combination of few dinner guests and the AC still being run. However, we mentioned it upon being seated and the staff was accommodating and turned it down. My scallop dish arrived in a dish on top of a plate, so that when I tired to eat it moved all over. However, as soon as I mentioned something the waitress immediately apologized and solved the problem with a napkin. The staff did things just right -- friendly, always there to fill a water glass, but not intrusive.

We can't wait until the next school event so that we have an excuse to return. KUDOS!

“New and noteworthy”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 7, 2012

We were passing through New London at dinner time and found this relatively new restaurant on Trip Advisor. Gaspar, the chef, judging from awards from the past that are posted on the walls, has had a full and successful career. Fortunately the restaurant could seat us, and we had a superb meal. Everything - appetizers such as crab cakes, burrata with tomato; and mains including fish and and a special pasta - was excellent. We will undoubtedly make reservations the next time we pass through and will certainly recommend it to friends.

“Best of the best”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 28, 2012 via mobile

It has only been around for 3 months but it is the best dining experience I have ever had. An award winning gourmet chef who is working in new London to be near family in a very classy, unpretentious , bistro that is cozy, friendly and inexpensive. My husband , a retired chef, and I spent all evening dining and were thoroughly delighted with everything. A must see in new London.

“Outrageous:)”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 5, 2012

Upon arrival. fabulous food servers Lisa and Carlo describe the flawlessly. They are foodies well versed in the complexities of what their chefs create. We enjoyed four courses. Each was seasoned perfectly. We wondered why there was salt & pepper on the table. Can't wait to return and try something new.
