“Great New Haven Pizza -- One of the Top Three”

I'd rate Modern third out of New Haven's top pizza places.

I should add that New Haven really does have the best pizza in the USA. That may be hard to believe for some outsiders but have a taste and then I think you will agree!

I'd put Pepes and Sallies (both of Wooster St - New Haven) ahead of Modern by some margain. Yet Modern is far easier to deal with on a day to day basis if you just want to eat and don't want to wait too long. The pies here are very good and the lines are CONSIDERABLY shorter than at Pepes and Sallies. You may even find a parking spot within Modern's lot! However don't ever expect to just walk right in - expect at least a 10 minute wait and it can often be longer.

For the best pizza, regardless of wait, go to Pepes or Sallies. These places are worth the additional time but not on a week by week basis.

18" was plenty for 2 adults and 2 teenagers. Thin crust. Popular with everyone. Good atmosphere and prompt service. Recommended and would definitely go again. Reasonably priced.

My husband grew up in New Haven, so he was basically weened on Modern pizza... as was his father and his entire family. So it's been a long-standing family tradition that we eat there, especially considering that our house is 2 blocks away from the famed eatery. But over the past few years, the quality of the pizza has gone way downhill. It's been awhile since we ate in the restuarant, but we've had take-out frequently and after this last bad meal, we're not doing it any more. The last several pizzas we've had have been burnt, and the bottom of the pizza is covered with burnt cornmeal crumbs that leave your hands black and are a complete mess. One side of the pizza will be well-done while the other will be undercooked. The pizza itself is thin and soggy in the middle. I hate to disparage a New Haven icon, but seriously, folks, are we eating the same pizza? It's overpriced and just downright bad. We get takeout from Amato's now, which is a few doors down from Modern. It's a family-run place that honestly cares about the quality of the pizza they're putting out. They even took some money off a pizza once because they thought it was over-cooked--and we hadn't even noticed or thought to complain, it seemed fine. Their pizza is consistently great, with good crust, no burnt edges, and no messy cornmeal bottom. Forget Modern, go down the street for good pizza.

My wife and I stopped here after reading the reviews. We were welcomed as soon as we walked in and given a booth. It was at the end of the lunch time so the crowd was beginning to thin out. Our server brought the drinks and appetizer quickly. This was our first time with New Haven style pizza and were pleasantly surprised. It is different than the pizza we get in Chicago, and I don't mean our deep dish but just regular. The crust was very thin and light and the pie had lots of sausage. We were unable to finish the medium size pie and took the leftovers back to the hotel. It held up well in the refrigerator and we ate it later for a snack. It was still delicious cold.
