My husband grew up in New Haven, so he was basically weened on Modern pizza... as was his father and his entire family. So it's been a long-standing family tradition that we eat there, especially considering that our house is 2 blocks away from the famed eatery. But over the past few years, the quality of the pizza has gone way downhill. It's been awhile since we ate in the restuarant, but we've had take-out frequently and after this last bad meal, we're not doing it any more. The last several pizzas we've had have been burnt, and the bottom of the pizza is covered with burnt cornmeal crumbs that leave your hands black and are a complete mess. One side of the pizza will be well-done while the other will be undercooked. The pizza itself is thin and soggy in the middle. I hate to disparage a New Haven icon, but seriously, folks, are we eating the same pizza? It's overpriced and just downright bad. We get takeout from Amato's now, which is a few doors down from Modern. It's a family-run place that honestly cares about the quality of the pizza they're putting out. They even took some money off a pizza once because they thought it was over-cooked--and we hadn't even noticed or thought to complain, it seemed fine. Their pizza is consistently great, with good crust, no burnt edges, and no messy cornmeal bottom. Forget Modern, go down the street for good pizza.
