Owner description: Yale University Art Gallery is the oldest college art museum in America. The Gallery’s encyclopedic holdings of 200,000 objects range from ancient times to the present day and represent civilizations from around the globe. FREE and open to the public. On December 12, 2012, the Yale University Art Gallery celebrated the grand opening of the renovated and expanded museum. The expanded Gallery transforms the visitor experience of both the museum and its esteemed collections. The project united the 1953 modernist structure designed by Louis Kahn, the 1928 Old Yale Art Gallery, and the 1866 Street Hall into one continuous structure while maintaining the distinctive architectural identity of each.

“Just beautiful and intelligent art”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 28, 2012

Several galleries with displays of American, European, African, and Asian art ..... small enough to really focus on treasures. Good audio guide; great lobby with books; a sculpture garden.... and newly renovated exhibits about to open. Free and welcoming.

“When the new galleries open it will be fabulous”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 18, 2012

They are doing a major renovation, so right now it is more limited in what is on display. The renovation includes adding a lot more exhibition space, and renovating a beautiful building. I really want to go back when it is open in December 2012

“One of the Great University Museums”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 27, 2012

Having seen close to 400 museums in the USA, I can honestly say that when you talk of the great university museums, you must put the Yale University Art Gallery close to the top of the list. Just Van Gogh's "Night Cafe" alone is worth the visit. This is truly a wonderful museum and while you are visiting you must go across the street to see the Yale Center for British Art.
