“Short get away”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 23, 2012

Our room was spacious and lovely. After reading some review I was concerned that it might be noisy. It was extremely quiet. We had an end room on the second floor and it was quieter than most 5 star hotels. The breakfast which I had also read about being crowded was not. They had a lovely outddor patio that my husband and I enjoyed having coffee. My only complaint is the inddor pool is not only small but really smells of clorine. However that is a minor issue. The location is great. You can walk to shopping and it is only a mile away from the Seaport.

Our room was spacious w/warm decor. We had Avery pleasant stay- the staff was accommodating and professional all the time- which was refreshing. Our family will definetly return to Residence hall- the cons were: our room had some odor whether from smoking, etc we just couldn't tell it was unshakeable (we were in the non-smokers wing) overall I would go back & recommend it to friends. The town is small & layed back- It gave us a chance to forget big city stress. The aquarium is spectacular- very nice family atmosphere.

My extended family and I stayed here for a wedding and all of us found this hotel to be exceptional. Reasons why:
-- terrific breakfast (waffles, hot buffet items like pancakes and sausage, cereals, pastries, lots of healthy choices like oatmeal, yogurt, milk (skim or 2%), bagels
-- 24 hour beverage bar (coffee, tea, cocoa)
-- nice amenities (pool, hot tub, outdoor game area for basketball or pickleball) with a good workout room
-- excellent customer service (friendly, respond immediately to requests)
-- very clean (one morning we left for only 45 minutes or so but still came back to a freshly cleaned room- very nice)
-- good location (right off the freeway but we never once heard traffic or other noise)
-- well appointed suites complete with a small kitchen with dishes, fridge, microwave
-- added touches like microwave popcorn in the rooms

We had a 5-star stay and will definitely stay there again if we're ever in Mystic again.

We needed a space for 5 adults plus a baby and found the 2 bedroom suite (with a fold out couch) worked well. The grounds are quite and our first floor location looked out onto woods. We ate a very adequate breakfast (included) - the Belgian waffles were wonderful! - Only issue was that the pool was quite cool and the jacuzzi did not heat up. I see the place was recently sold so perhaps they are going to do a big upgrade.

Room Tip: The rooms in the back are very quiet - nicely maintained grounds, including a paddle ball court.

Dear bsa819:
Thank you so much for taking the time to write a review on your recent stay at our Residence Inn by Marriott - Mystic. I am happy to read you were satisfied with our accommodations and services and enjoyed breakfast as well. I'm sorry our pool's heating system was temporarily out of order; it has since been repaired

I hope you will come back and visit us, should your travels bring you to Mystic, CT again!

We stayed in the 2 bedroom suite during our Memorial Day weekend visit. First, there is a good chance you will drive past the hotel because trees block the "Residence Inn" sign, so it is difficult to see it. The room was dated, and average. The towels were very thin and fraying. The cleaning staff does a great job with what they have to work with and are very friendly. I suggest trying to get a room on the 2nd floor. We were on the first floor, and were greeted in the very early hours of the morning by children continually running up and down the hallways, non-stop. I blame the parents lack of courtesy to the other guests and not the hotel, but we all got about 4 hours of sleep that night because of this. When we came back in the late afternoon we were again greeted with the sound of the running children in the hallway upstairs. I did go and speak to the front desk about it at this point and it appeared to stop shortly after. So request the second floor otherwise, you may not get a lot of sleep! It is convienent having the kitchen area and we got our use out of it. We brought in our own food so I can't comment on the free breakfast they provide, but it did smell good down the hall. I saw a lot of people with pets as well, so if you travel with your dog, it seems to be a convienent place to stay.

Room Tip: Get a room on the second floor!

I have been coming to this hotel for the past three years once or twice a year and just returned May 26 from a one week stay.
Fabulous location, great service, clean rooms, good food, great staff and excellent manager Scott Barlow.
You could not ask for more and this location is in Mystic Village so there is allot to do for sightseeing, shopping and restaurants.

Room Tip: Rooms on top floor are a less quiet location if you are childless.

Avoid.

[Not up to Residence Inn standards. Not representative of typical, good-quality RI. If’ you’ve never experienced a Marriott Residence Inn, this is *not* the norm; don’t be put-off the brand. (A typical RI is on par with Hilton’s Homewood Suites well-maintained accommodations & guest-centric service.)]

Expect to eat breakfast & dinner in confined (and at times overcrowded) gatehouse, where all food "must be consumed" -- day, after day, after day – morning & evening. (Long on signage, short on common sense.)

If you’ve prep work/phone calls to make over morning breakfast – try through ear-piercing screams of child inches away at next table. (Apparently, bringing food back to your room (where you can work/eat at your desk/table) is verboten.)

Likewise with evening meals; after a long day, try to relax in peace & quiet of room (or try to finish up some work at your desk), only to be halted with your full-meal plate in-hand & being pointed to sign saying all food “must be consumed” in the gatehouse -- day, after day, after day.

(I was not the only guest eventually driven away altogether (from breakfasts *and* dinners) by draconian meal-time practices. How many other guests I saw in hallway & elevator carrying their evening to-go bags from local eateries; exchanging restaurant recommendations & commenting on meal-time peculiarities at this RI( in contrast to other (typical) RIs). Yet the gatehouse was *still* short on food despite a number of us purchasing meals off-site.)

Meager food portions are placed out (2 bananas for a *roomful* of waiting guests, a few containers of sugary yoghurt, a few pieces of cut fruit in largely empty bowl…). Healthy choices limited. Once items are depleted, do not expect them to be replenished. (Although 3- to 4-person kitchen staff appear to be busily bustling about, containers of food are *chronically* empty -- whether at the beginning, middle, or end of meal time – day, after day, after day...)

Food is *guarded*, not served. (At one point in que, guest joked they’d anticipated getting sharp rap on knuckles if they’d taken an extra spoonful of porridge under the disapproving eye of matron. Gales of laughter followed – making our communal suffering bearable.)

Guest laundry washers & dryers are well worn. Anticipate periodically checking for available machines as they are used for hotel towels & uniforms. (Attempting to scrub dirt stain off interior (center) part of washer, is futile; stain is ingrained.)

Stand -- no sitting -- at hotel computer. Ensure paper is in printer before attempting to print documents of any length -- day, after day, after day.

Key card problem opening side-entry door, *numerous* times observed & opened door for others struggling with their cards, as they had done for me -- day, after day, after day.

Staff (who smoked) habitually opened door by crumpling rug against door & propping it open – allowing cold air – (as well as smell of cigarette smoke) to fill hallway -- day, after day, after day. (Also, more importantly, a security violation – as the door was not fully latched closed after the cigarette break.) Had to keep uncrumpling rug as you’d stumble on it exiting or entering doorway -- day, after day, after day.

Inconvenient for short stay if you plan on eating out or cooking most meals.

Inadequate/problematic for longer stays if you haven't time to prepare your own meals or drive around for take-out each and every day.

If you're self-sufficient, you can make do. If you'd like a bit more convenience, look elsewhere.

[Potential to be outstanding RI with intensive overhaul/refurbishment of accommodations, practices. Unfortunately, this RI has steadily worsened & alienated yet *another* guest – one of the last hold-outs. (Colleagues *refuse* to stay here; Seinfeld’s “Soup Nazi”— humourous reference though it is & now inside joke (as well as “Queen Bee”) -- is an all too real, lived-through experience.) Through the passage of time/perspective, can look back on with a chuckle. How Marriott Corporate allows this RI to go on for as long as it has is a mystery. Surely someone *must* be aware – if guests know, surely management knows.]

If this RI meets your needs, stay -- enjoy.

If this RI doesn’t meet your needs, no need to tough it out. Other equally, well-located accommodations are nearby. Although not RIs, they’ll meet your expectations, and won’t leave you wondering if the inmates are running the asylum.
