After learning of this bridge on TripAdvisor, we decided to go take a look. Actually, the first time we caught a glimpse of the bridge, (which was yesterday) we were stuck in traffic just around the corner from the bridge as it rose into the air. We were stopped for about ten minutes, but all the motorists were very pateint; they turn off their ignition and just sit and wait and enjoy the view. We could see the masts of sailboats as they passed by and I wish we were closer to the action so we could have taken photos.
This afternoon we made a special trip to see the bridge and we timed it perfectly. We stopped at Mystic Drawbridge Ice Cream, ordered our cones and sat out on their deck. What a perfect view! (And the ice cream was fabulous!). We didn't wait more than five minutes, when we realized the bridge was about to go up.
As the very loud bell sounds, pedestrians quickly scurry to get off the bridge and all us tourists are standing around waiting for the "show". Having never seen a Bascule bridge before, this was quite a sight to behold! We didn't see any saiboats this time, just a few small motor boats. The day prior, when we were stuck in traffic, there were about 10 boats that went through.
If you've never seen a bridge like this before, it's worth it to pay a visit. Grab an ice cream, watch the bridge go up,window shop and visit Mystic Pizza. All the other tourists will be doing the same!
