After reading some critical reviews about the Whitehall, we had some trepidation about following through with our reservation. We didn't even bring in our luggage until we checked out the room. We are so glad we did, though, because we had a wonderful time. The Whitehall Mansion Inn is NOT a hotel, it's a house, and you're getting a room in that house. We stayed in Woodbridge Hall, which, although we didn't need it, is outfitted beautifully for the handicapped. The website for the Whitehall states clearly that there is no innkeeper in the house, but it is a very short walk over to the Residence Inn, where the staff is friendly and helpful. There is also a phone in the room if you need to call the staff. There is a television in the armoire but we didn't want to ruin the illusion of the period (but I will admit that we did enjoy the jet bath and modern plumbing). We found a classical station on the radio and that was lovely. Okay, so the "breakfast" part of the "bed & breakfast" is not so great (muffins & awful coffee), and it's a short walk over to the Residence Inn to have a hot breakfast. But come on, to be able to stay in a house from the 1700s that is warm and comfortable and very atmospheric, a little inconvenience is a small price to pay. Our room was clean and airy. One night we pulled the two chairs and table nearer to the fireplace and had a very romantic evening before a lovely fire. The bed was comfortable and the air conditioning more than sufficient; it allowed us to use the fireplace and feel very cozy. Everything we wanted to see in Mystic was close by. The Seaport was a lot of fun and the Whitehall's package deal included two-day tickets, which we appreciated. It also included tickets to the Aquarium, which has great exhibits but you need a lot of tolerance for crowds and kids to enjoy. Getting back to our room at the Whitehall was a relief. It felt like home and not just a room in a hotel. We were able to see two other rooms while we were there...Lucy's Parlour and Benjamin's room. I looked around carefully and found them both to be clean. Even with a couple of rainy days, we had a great weekend and would definitely come back to stay at the Whitehall Mansion Inn. No ghosts there, but plenty of friendly Woodbridge spirits.
