“Felt like royalty!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 19, 2013

Checked into the Great Cedar Hotel for the first time usually stay at MGM Grand or Grand peqout at Foxwoods. Had a great rate of $79 due to my player's card. When we arrived late (8:00) due to horrible weather conditions, we were told that the room type we reserved was no longer available.. but no worries... Jean at the front desk upgraded us to a wonderful suite for no extra charge! We had a bedroom with a beautiful window seat, living room with wet bar, one full bath with a marble shower and two person hot tub, and another 1/2 bath off the living room! The suite was so nice we hardly left it at all. They also gave us a late check out the next day! Room service was wonderful and the amenities in the suite were top notch- down to the plush robes! Would book again in a heartbeat!

Room Tip: If suite upgrades are available and reasonable then you should go for it!

4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 26, 2013

This was our first stay at Great Cedar. Although MGM at Foxwoods beats it out, it was a decent hotel. The locale is very convenient as it is right above the Foxwoods casino. We had a king bed which was very comfortable. There was a desk connected to the bureau with computer connection and free wi-fi. The bureau housed a refrigerator and safe, along with 2 deep drawers and the coffee/tea supplies. There was a flat screen TV on the bureau. There was a corner window seat as well as another chair and 2 tables. There is a clock radio with an I-pod dock on the nightstand. The bathroom was very clean and had an extra sink just outside the bathroom, across from the closet. This was nice to have two sinks/mirrors. The room showed some wear in frayed toss pillows and the toilet seat was missing the hinge cover.

My only real complaint is the housekeeping. Upon arrival, the room was fine. We stayed two nights so after getting up and out on our first full day, we were quite surprised when we returned at 3:00 in the afternoon and our room wasn't cleaned yet. The housekeeper was in the hall and said she hadn't gotten to it yet. We told her we'd be back and went to the pool for a while. Once we returned, although they had been in the room, there were problems. We had had breakfast delivered to the room in the morning and because we couldn't break down the table to fit it through the door into the hall, we had left it in the room, assuming housekeeping would take care of it. Well, they didn't. It was still in our room! Also, they did not give us new soap (the bars of soap are tiny). They did not replenish the coffee condiments that we used (stirrers, sugar, etc.) So, we weren't thrilled with the lack of care given our room by that staff.

Overall though, it was a nice stay. The pool and hot tub are nice and clean. The valet service was great. The front desk staff was nice on check in and check out. We had a room far away from the elevator, at the end of the hall which was nice and quiet. We'd consider going back.

We have stayed at all 4 Foxwood hotels and Great Cedar is our favorite! We got down there early enough to check in and immediately hit the pool/hot tub. This area was SO clean and the water was perfect! There was no one in the room which added to the serenity. The locker room came as a HUGE surprise - it was complete with toiletries, towels, face cloths. There was a nice sized steam room, another hot tub for private soaking. Everything was so clean. There was even a "lounge" area in the locker room. I am a woman and my locker room was great, however, my boyfriend's locker room experience was very nice amenity-wise, but there seemed to be a different crowd just lounging in the locker room which made him a little uncomfortable.

Our room was very spacious and very clean. Our alcove window seat was a nice touch. We ordered room service late in the evening and the room steward lady was very pleasant. The only thing that I didn't realize until after I signed the bill was that there was a tip already built in - so heads up. I'm just glad she was pleasant and the extra 20% I gave her wasn't unwarranted! The food we got (midnight) was delicious - and plentiful!

I hesitate in writing this review because there are so many good deals at this site that I don't want to share and ruin things for myself!!

We stayed over the holiday weekend and had a really good time. I was skeptical at first as this was a comped room. The room was very nice, floor 7 with a nice view of the forest. The bed was comfortable and the bathroom was clean. The bathroom was small and the bath had been redone with a one piece tub/shower combo but it fit the bill. The rooms at the MGM are ncier and the clilentelle is nicer at the MGM as well but the Great Cedar was fine for a night of football and gambling!
The front desk personnel had no personality and we had to wait to check in. The woman said that she would call us when the room was ready but this did not happen. Not an issue as we went during half time of the game and checked and we were all set.

Room Tip: ask for a high floor

I -- 30-year-old poker-playing male traveling with pal -- booked a room at Foxwood's Great Cedar Hotel because the MGM wasn't available. It was a bit of a last-second decision, so we paid the price ($324 [all in] for the Friday night between Christmas and New Year's). When it comes to overnight gambling forays, the hotel is less important than the poker room.

To that point, our schedule was as follows: Arrive at hotel at 10 a.m. and self-park (a "free" [included] valet option is also available); play poker for 3 hours; eat at Fuddrucker's, where the unlimited fixins bar boasting tomato slices that could have benefited from a mortician's touch, waterlogged iceberg and all-you-can drink nacho cheese product; check into hotel room; return to poker room for 2-hour session; compete in 6 p.m. poker tournament; eat at fast-food pan-Asian option (Noodles) in a nearby food court area; drool as I count and re-count (and re-count) my stack; sleep.

We were out of there by 11 a.m. the next morning.

Noodles spot deserves another sentence or two. Post-tournament ousting (12:30 a.m.), I was famished and excited at the prospect of kimchi fried rice. There were a few people waiting when we arrived, but the crowd quickly ballooned. The chefs clearly couldn't keep up with the demand. There weren't enough woks. The mob began to grow restless. One cook angrily motioned "no more orders" or "shut it down," depending on whom you ask. Needless to say, the food quality suffered. What could have been the highlight to the night was ultimately a grave disappointment.

The Tribal Elders of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribe have done a decent enough job maintaining the compound, which is really my only option from Boston (90 minute drive). The room (519) was clean and offered a view of some sort of hotel delivery area. $325 feels a bit insane, but given that we booked a week before our stay and opted for a Friday night between Christmas and New Year's, we can't really complain. We were only there to sleep, so we didn't sample any of the myriad steakhouses or the spa. If nothing else Foxwood's is easy.

We booked a room here at the last moment on a Sunday night, as it was a great rate and we usually don't get to stay in Foxwoods hotels too often. The room was very large and clean. The king bed was very comfortable and the bathroom was adequate and clean. We liked the fact it also had a refridgerator and a safe. It was nice to be able to access the casinos just a ride down in the elevator.
We would come back here or try the other Foxwoods hotels as well.

Room Tip: We asked for a higher floor away from the elevator. Quieter

We stayed at Foxwoods over the Thanksgiving Holiday and had a great time! We have stayed at all of the properties at Foxwoods many times over and have never had any issues. This trip, we booked an overnight stay at the Great Cedar Hotel. We arrived early and the front desk reception was a bit cold and a little unhelpful but we could see they were very busy. They said they would call my cell phone when the room was ready, so we went to lunch and gambled a bit. Three hours later we still had not received a phone call so we went back to reception and our room had been ready but no one bothered to call us. Not a big deal. Our room was beautiful and very clean and housekeeping did a lovely turndown service later in the evening and were incredibly accommodating. The women at the front desk the next morning were much friendlier and helpful, so perhaps the cranky women the evening prior were just mad at having to work the Holiday… My only true complaint would be that the sheets at the Great Cedar always seem stiff to me; like you are sleeping with parchment paper over you. They are not great, but the bed is very comfortable. There were many children staying at the hotel that evening but noise was never an issue for us until the next morning when we heard room service knock on the door next to us, so the walls appear to be somewhat thin, but not terribly so. The hotel is right in the middle of everything and is very convenient. If you want luxury and a little pampering, the Pequot is probably your best bet, but if you want convenience, nice rooms, beautiful surroundings and comfort, the Great Cedar is well… great! Overall, a very pleasant stay.
