“Fantastic base to dive in the Tulamben area”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 31, 2013

We stayed with Villa Alba for four nights and did four days of diving. I cannot recommend them strongly enough. The centre owner Alex and his wife are fantastic hosts, helpful and convivial. When we were there the clientele was a mix of Brits, Australians, Chinese and Germans.

The resort is quite new with great accommodation. We had a nice view of Mount Agung and the sea. All rooms are air conditioned and the resort has plenty of nice spaces for relaxing by the sea when off gassing or for non-diving partners.

The centre is well set up for diving of all standards with good quality, well maintained hire equipment if you need it and free Nitrox for the suitably qualified. The diving operation is well organised and the staff are hard working and incredibly helpful. The centre can provide a range of PADI and BSAC Training. Alex even offered us a 10%discount as BSAC Members. I believe they can also accommodate Tec Divers (Rebreather owners note the import cost of scrubber makes it expensive in Indonesia). There are two pools 3 metre plus which can be used for training or just a relaxing dip after a dive.

The diving in the Tulamben area is fantastic. We dived exclusively from the shore. The Liberty Ship is probably the big pull around here and a great dive (try the drift drive across Corral Garden finishing at the wreck for a top dive) but there is fantastic macro diving at Secret Seraya (definitely pack your camera and housing for this trip). These sites are 10-15 minutes by truck from the resort. There is free buddy diving on the House Reef after an orientation dive with a guide. The House Reef is excellent and definitely worth a few dives.

We will definitely stay and dive at Villa Alba next time we are in Bali.

Room Tip: All the rooms seemed to be to a good standard.

I meant to write the review for Villa Alba earlier in Dutch but I think I better try to write in English instead (please disregard any mistakes). My intention is to share this unique experience with you, so here it is.

We were being picked up and brought back to the airport as we arranged this in advance when you make the booking. We stayed at Villa Alba Dive Resort in June 2012 and without a doubt, this lovely place is the most amazing resort that we have ever stayed at in ANY country. Every day, we love to have breakfast at the restaurant with very romantic views of the 1st pool and the sunrise. Alex and Jessica made us feel very much like home whilst we are so far away from home.

The staff and the owners are the warm and hospitable people, they do their best to make your stay unforgettable. The very best feature of Villa Alba is the kind, attentive, and very genuine personalized service. We lacked for nothing during our stay, furthermore, the staff even took me on the motorbike to the local market nearby to experience the way of life in the small village, which was interesting and cannot be found in any guide book.

The room is spacious, well-decorated in colourful Balinese-Chinese style. Like many other teens, my teenage daughter enjoyed being inside the red bright room and the free Wi-Fi, it was very kind of the owners as they were concerned about her. The room we stayed has a king-sized bed, which was comfortable and the bathroom was lovely. In the day, you can see the volcano from the top roof and at night, we fail sleep with peaceful sound of the sea rushing the shore and we looked at the glowing stars. what a fantastic place to be and my sentiment was this place is a paradise and it is absolutely “Heaven on Earth! ”

The resort has its own restaurant with the best Chinese and European food served at the restaurant by the 2nd pool, however, we wanted to have local food, the owners would also introduced us to Indonesian restaurants nearby and they arranged the taxi for us.

We decided that this place was the best for us so we extended our stay not just because of the location and comfortable place but also we felt as if we were one of the family members here.
Besides being enjoyed our stay, we also had lots of fun diving with Alex and Jessica, they are very careful, attentive and professional diving instructors so I had no fear to dive in the sea after having lessons with them. I love the idea of just walking into the sea from the resort, it was perfect for me as a new diver.

Is there any down side of this place? To be honest, not that I can think of. As the previous review said: don't be put off by the bumpy road, I agree as it was just a short ride, down hill road to the resort and I looked at it as an off-road experience in a local village, that makes my trip even more interesting than a boring concrete road in the city or the highway.

We highly recommend Villa Alba for your stay and diving at Tulamben, we will definitely coming back again for our next holidays in Indonesia. I hope my review will help you to choose a good place to stay in Tulamben (we are very choosy because we know what want).

We recently spent 2 weeks in North Eastern Bali with friends to do 2 short dive courses that were held out of Villa Alba. Unfortunately we didn't stay at Villa Alba (we stayed at a much more expensive resort down the road). Our experience at Villa Alba really made our trip.

Hosts Alex and Jessica are welcoming and hospitable and have created a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. We were free to swim, book in on dives, go snorkelling, book massages by the pool and stay for lunch or dinner, with a changing set daily menu that ranged from Chinese to Balinese and Western cuisine. Alex and Jessica and their team are working hard to get feedback and respond to guests needs. Their attention to detail and hospitality was superb.

On completion of our dive courses at Villa Alba, we returned every day of the trip for all of our subsequent dives, and even on non-diving days we booked day trips and massages by the pool there, enjoyed the set menu meals and swam and looked out at the views.

Don't be put off by the rough, bumpy drive down the access road, once you drive through the gates it is a tropical paradise! Accommodation is new, with 2 beautiful new pools and a tropical landscaped garden. The pool on the waterfront is an infinity pool that looks over the sea. From that vantage point we could see a lot of sea life: jumping fish, one morning we saw dolphins, and another, a whale!

Diving could be accessed by walking directly into the sea across the pebble beach, or by car or boat to other nearby sites. The local dive masters who took us out after our courses were very professional and took us on wonderful dives.

We will certainly return to the area, and when we do, this will be our first choice in accommodation.

We stayed in Villa Alba for 5 nights as part of a diving tour of Bali. The resort is beautiful, the rooms spacious, comfortable and spotlessly clean. The resort has been built in two parts with the original house and infinity pool overlooking the beach and the newer rooms overlooking the garden pool. This allows for a bit of a change of scenery.

The hotel serves a mix of Chinese and European guests so has a nice multi-cultural mix.

Meals are served at a communal table, so a good chance to chat with folks. Jessica (the owner) is a star in the kitchen and the Chinese food was superb. Meals are served buffet style with a great selection of dishes at lunch and dinner. The home made dumplings were great.

As for the diving - this is well run by David and Fu. The house reef is one of the best dive sites around.

All in all - a lovely stay - due in large measure to the hospitality of Jessica. Hope to see you again soon.

My wife and I first visited Tulemben about 5 years ago, the village is still unspoilt but now there are a few more restaurants available. Villa Alba is a charming resort with direct beach access and our room had a view of the sea. Waking up in the morning to the gentle sound of the sea and wandering out to the terrace for that first cup of coffee is how a vacation should be. The diving is what we came for and we were not disappointed, we enjoyed the diving more this visit than previously. Villa Alba had a good selection of new equipment and is on top of the local dive sites, in fact you can walk from the resort onto the beach and dive the house reef. I also had a few early morning dives on the Liberty Wreck, it is a 5 min. drive, you can be blowing bubbles before 8am. Early morning is the best time to dive the wreck there are few divers and the large barracuda and batfish visit at that time, our guide Maddie was great always smiling and knows the waters well. We had two dives finished before lunch and spent the afternoons riding up the coast or just being lazy. In fact I have not had such a relaxing holiday for years this was helped by Jessica and Alex, the resort owners organizing everything we needed. I strongly recommend Villa Alba we had a very enjoyable and relaxing time the rooms are well decorated, I especially liked the local art, and comfortable and the resort has a great beach location. My wife said our vacation was very romantic like a second honeymoon.
