My wife and I stayed at the Tollgate House Inn in Oct 2006. We had a good time, but there were some issues.
First the good - the buildings and grounds are very nice, with a cozy country feel. Just a short easy drive to Litchfield or Torrington.
The staff are very friendly and helpful - no problems there!
The dining room and dinner were excellent, as was the service. We've eaten at some of the finest restaurants in New York and the Northeast, so we're pretty informed in that regard. You won't be disappointed.
Even the continental breakfast was pretty good! I was expecting a few stale pastries and some weak coffee, but they had lots of goodies.
But the room itself, oh the room...
We aren't complainers. I'm easily satisfied. But at almost $200/night, I expect the room to at least be CLEAN. I know the house is old, and I'm a fan of old architecture, so I wasn't expecting perfectly level floors or straight, clean lines - that's part of the charm. BUT, the bathroom floor hadn't been scrubbed in years, and the bathroom walls were actually dirty! Dried splashes of unknown liquids, hairs stuck to the walls. I almost got a sponge and wiped it down myself. The lamps next to the bed were a tarnished bronze and the shades were ripped and streaked with dirt. Come on, with the money they're charging, they can't drop $50 for a couple of new lamps? The loveseat in front of the fireplace had seen better days, and had enough stains to make us not want to put anything on it, let alone sit on it and enjoy the fire. The whole room just had a look of being not very well-kept. The cleaning staff really needs to go to town on that room. Maybe the rooms in the newer buildings are different, I can't say. And while it didn't ruin the trip, it certainly didn't make us eager to return to our room at the end of a long day.
At least the bed was big and VERY comfortable, with clean sheets and blankets.
Oh, did I mention that there are two doors into the room, and the quilt rack was in front of one of them? That's the one they told us to go through, so my first impression of the room was, "Hey, what the heck is blocking the door?" Never a good sign when you have to force your way into the room, and just an indication of the lackluster attention to detail.
But overall not a bad trip. I just needed to vent my frustrations, considering I was spending quite a bit of cash to have a romantic weekend away.
