The Tollgate Hill Inn was one of the worst inns I have ever stayed in.

The room was charmless, with mismatched battered old furniture (not antiques), the wall air conditioner and bathroom fan were noisy and inefficient, the TV was tiny, the bathroom had mold around the sink and the towels were poor quality.

The breakfast was a disgrace--2 cold cereals, only whole milk and no decaf coffee, flies on the dried up fruit, and sour canned orange juice.

While I was eating breakfast, my room was "cleaned" for the next guest, even though I had not packed or checked out,

I arrived in a rainstorm and could not locate the manager to check in. After I looked around the building and knocked on some doors, a person emerged to tell me that the manager was hiding in the bathroom because she was afraid of storms.

The inn's website is deficient and there is no owner on the premises, two red flags that usually indicate a poorly run facility.
Untrained teens cannot be expected to manage such a business.

I wasted $190 for one night at this dreadful place. Apparently this place specializes in weddings. Wedding planners beware.

I had requested the room from seeing their website. This was for a one-night stay. I knew we had one of the least expensive rooms reserved, #8 in the schoolhouse, for $115 per night.

When we got to our room, we found it was tiny, (and smelled like an old wood stove or damp fireplace AFTER the A/C had been running for awhile.) There were only a couple of lamps, and one of the shades was falling apart. Magazines were on the floor behind the bed, and I don't think it had been vacuumed. The bed was clean and fresh. The bath was across the hall. It had a bottle of cleaner and a damp bathmat in the middle of the floor, and the towels were disheveled, and obviously used. I went back to the office, and told them they'd need to have the bath cleaned.

We went out for awhile, and when we came back a couple of hours later, the bath had been cleaned but I still wasn't happy so went to the office. Finally the manager offered a room in the main building, one of the nicest ones, for the same price. This room was totally different ... big, really nice canopied bed, big bath, sitting area with sofa, etc. with a balcony.

When we left the next morning, I could find no one to leave the keys with, and the office didn't open until 9 or 10 a.m. When I called the number for the innkeeper per their info book, got no answer so just left the keys in what I felt was a safe place.

I liked the manager/staff I encountered, the setting is beautiful and I've heard the restaurant is great. I might go back, but would stay away from their smaller rooms.

My wife and I celebrated our 15 year wedding anniversary with a long weekend at the Tollgate Hill Inn. We had a fantastic time and couldnt be happier with our decision to stay there.
Our room was spacious and clean. The property is gorgeous - peaceful and serene. Alicia and her team were extremely hospitable. We also had dinner at their restaurant onsite. We were honestly a feeling mixed about eating there, but the food was delicious and the setting in the 1745 William Bull Tavern, with only 4 other tables of diners, was very special. And the after-party with the new friends we met at the quaint bar was an all-time great.
The Litchfield Hills area of Connecticut is perfect for a romantic getaway, and look no futher than the Tollgate Hill Inn for your place to stay.

“Not Nearly As Nice As Advertised”

Tollgate Hill Inn and Restaurant

This is not the cozy, charming inn that it appears to be on the web site. Two lamps in our suite were burned out (though the staff fixed them when we asked). The bathroom was tiny and had rough towels that weren't changed during our two-day stay. Breakfast at this "Bed & Breakfast" is served in a dank basement that doubles as a meeting hall for the local Rotary chapter; the pastries were store-bought, the cantaloupe almost petrified. The only redeeming part of our visit was using the fireplace in our suite. Overall, we felt duped and, at $195 a night, overcharged.

“Good, not great”

My wife and I stayed at the Tollgate House Inn in Oct 2006. We had a good time, but there were some issues.

First the good - the buildings and grounds are very nice, with a cozy country feel. Just a short easy drive to Litchfield or Torrington.

The staff are very friendly and helpful - no problems there!

The dining room and dinner were excellent, as was the service. We've eaten at some of the finest restaurants in New York and the Northeast, so we're pretty informed in that regard. You won't be disappointed.

Even the continental breakfast was pretty good! I was expecting a few stale pastries and some weak coffee, but they had lots of goodies.

But the room itself, oh the room...

We aren't complainers. I'm easily satisfied. But at almost $200/night, I expect the room to at least be CLEAN. I know the house is old, and I'm a fan of old architecture, so I wasn't expecting perfectly level floors or straight, clean lines - that's part of the charm. BUT, the bathroom floor hadn't been scrubbed in years, and the bathroom walls were actually dirty! Dried splashes of unknown liquids, hairs stuck to the walls. I almost got a sponge and wiped it down myself. The lamps next to the bed were a tarnished bronze and the shades were ripped and streaked with dirt. Come on, with the money they're charging, they can't drop $50 for a couple of new lamps? The loveseat in front of the fireplace had seen better days, and had enough stains to make us not want to put anything on it, let alone sit on it and enjoy the fire. The whole room just had a look of being not very well-kept. The cleaning staff really needs to go to town on that room. Maybe the rooms in the newer buildings are different, I can't say. And while it didn't ruin the trip, it certainly didn't make us eager to return to our room at the end of a long day.

At least the bed was big and VERY comfortable, with clean sheets and blankets.

Oh, did I mention that there are two doors into the room, and the quilt rack was in front of one of them? That's the one they told us to go through, so my first impression of the room was, "Hey, what the heck is blocking the door?" Never a good sign when you have to force your way into the room, and just an indication of the lackluster attention to detail.

But overall not a bad trip. I just needed to vent my frustrations, considering I was spending quite a bit of cash to have a romantic weekend away.
