We have traveled extensively in the SW of France, always preferring to stay in Chambre d'Hotes or small hotels. We have stayed in some beautiful places but La Brugere is truly unbeatable and far exceeds the expectations you draw from their website. What you see on the site is a stunning house with gorgeous gardens and lovely decor but what you don't appreciate is the stunning setting on the River Isle - it really is quite magical.
You never quite know what sort of hospitality you will receive but right from the warm welcome with a cold aperitif to the upgrade to their stunning first floor suite we couldn't have been happier.
Raphael and Patrick are perfect hosts, brimming with enthusiasm and passion for their new home and business venture and ready with a cold beer when we returned from a long day of house-hunting. Be sure to ask about the history of the estate as it is really interesting!
We had booked to stay in Chambre 07 but were upgraded to Suite 21 which is spacious with beautiful views over the gardens. The bathroom is something else and bigger than most bedrooms! Knowing of my love of interiors, Raphael did show us round the other rooms and we'd have been happy in any of them - all have been decorated stylishly and in keeping with this grand house.
On the first evening we ate with Raphael and Patrick and they were warm and entertaining hosts. As a qualified chef, Raphael certainly doesn't disappoint with his cooking and is better than most of the restaurants within driving distance. Breakfasts were delicious, made extra special by the amazing home made brioche..the best I have ever tasted!
Finally, I couldn't finish this review without a mention of Hercule..the star of the show! A French bulldog with a huge personality and his portrait and bust on display, and even his picture as a logo on a CD Patrick produced.
We would go out of our way to stay here again and know we have made new friends in Raphael, Patrick and Hercule.
I really don't think any of them will disappoint but Suite 21 for space and luxury!
