My mother and I discovered The Spa at Grand Lake a few years ago. We love it so much that we've returned about twice a year ever since. We look forward to our visits and we enjoy every minute that we're there. It's a great opportunity for "mother-daughter time" for us. It gives us a chance to focus on our health and well-being, as well as our friendship. The entire trip is stress-free and is a time of fun, healing, inspiration and rejuvenation.
We are from the Baltimore area and it is worth the trip to CT. It is just a train ride away. The staff makes it easy because as we step off the train in Hartford, we are immediately met by a staff member who then drives us right to the spa, at no extra charge. All we have to do is let them know when our train is scheduled to arrive. It couldn't be easier. Many times, Anne (the owner) has met us at the train station herself, which we always enjoy.
So much is included in the price at The Spa at Grand Lake. For example, some of the things included are the accommodations, all the meals, transportation to/from the train station, all of the fitness classes, plus 1/2 hour of massage for each night of your stay. With having the classes included, you don't need to hesitate to try something new, such as bellydancing, NIA (one of my favorites!), kickboxing, or heated yoga.
A few specific recommendations: If you're looking for deep tissue massage, Steve is the therapist for you. I've had many massages over the years and Steve is a standout. Kathleen is a very skilled massage therapist and is kind, professional and focused on your overall well-being. Linda also really knows her stuff! All excellent. Bonnie is an esthetician there who has helped to alleviate skin issues that I have been dealing with for years. She is gentle, uses only natural, botanical products, and is knowledgeable about many areas of health. Eric's morning heated yoga class is worth getting up early for. It doesn't matter if you are new to yoga or if you have been practicing for years, he is skilled and patient and may even suggest alternative poses to best suit your level. He is an excellent instructor and coach, with a strong focus on form, safety and the importance/benefits of deep breathing. John offers a class called NIA which is my favorite non-yoga class at the spa.
The food is excellent, healthy, and abundant. They recently changed chefs and we found the food to be just as creative and delicious as before.. and the desserts have gotten even better!! :) It is a reminder to me that if you choose the right foods, you can eat satisfying portions and still lose weight. I find that to be encouraging.
The Spa at Grand Lake offers an intimate, family-like feeling. I think you'll find that you can relax and be yourself. When you walk in and see Nicole, Irene, Pat, or Anne, they will do all they can to make you feel welcome and at home. If you choose to go, enjoy your trip!
