“This is the authentic, affordable greek island experience you're looking for”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 6, 2013

After the chaos of more touristed islands like Santorini, Scala Apartments, and the island of Naxos in general, fulfilled our fantasy of a Greek vacation! Evangelia and Nikos have set up a lovely oasis that has the feel of a cousin's sprawling country compound. Little kids chase kittens through the vineyards while the grown ups drink wine on the terrace, and no one seems to be in a hurry. My boyfriend and I met up with another couple and we rented two adjacent rooms for three nights; we wished we could have stayed longer. Breakfasts were wonderful--homemade apricot jam made from a tree on the property, creamy yogurt, coffee, little almond cookies baked by their daughter, etc. We spent plenty of time at the beach--Alyko cove was quiet, wild, gorgeous--but we also had a lot of fun exploring the island in our rental car. A rental car is a must if you want to enjoy everything the island has to offer--including climbing Mt. Zas, the highest peak in the Cyclades. The little mountain towns in the foothills are also magical, and the portera in Naxos Town is a very special place to be at sunset (bring your swimsuit to bathe in the harbor and see the sky turn pink behind the ancient gate).

A real Naxos highlight was the food--since it's an agricultural island, all of the vegetables, fruit, meat, and cheese are local and crazy flavorful. We couldn't find a mediocre meal, no matter where we went, but Axiotisa, a restaurant visible from the central yard in Scala Apartments, was the highlight of our trip in Greece and Turkey. The food lovingly prepared by Evangelia in the main kitchen was also very, very delicious--don't miss it. Evangelia and Nikos even make their own wine on the property, and they were generous with this home brew and conversation. Overall, they were fabulous hosts in the grand tradition of warm Greek hospitality, and my girlfriend Carina and I will be back the next summer we can spare!

Scala is a beautifully quiet and relaxing family-run place, set 100 metres up a small lane with only ten apartments, nice dining area and sea views. The beach and small shop are ten minutes walk with two tavernas close by. It's very clean and family friendly. Furthermore, the home-cooked dinners are excellent and nicely priced. In fact, despite one restaurant (which was on par) we didn't eat better during our 18-day trip to Athens and the Greek islands.

There is one key point that needs highlighting in particular: hospitality. I've stayed at a few places over the years and I have NEVER experienced the hospitality Nikos, Evangelia and their family provided. Nothing was too much trouble. They went far beyond expectation, from picking us up at the port (post-booking extra service with no charge), lending us bikes (no charge), driving us to a competitively priced hire-car company (no charge) and numerous generous gestures that made our stay very special. It is easy to see that they are genuine people who love what they do and just wanted to make us feel at home. In fact, I embarrassed myself by offering a tip at the end of the stay, which was graciously refused. Sorry Nikos! The issue is that we have since and will for some time at least, compare the hospitality from Scala with that of other accommodation. Nothing comes up to the mark. We're left saying: "The people were friendly and helpful, but it's not as good as Scala Apartments." Many thanks again for a fantastic stay.

This is the best accommodation in Naxos. Now that this is clear let me explain. The rooms are fantastic, spotless, spacious, with great views and have a fridge, a kitchenette and all necessary utensils. Scala Apartments are located 20 mins from Naxos town which is a huge plus because it is so quiet and relaxed and also, the island's best unspoiled beaches are just a short drive away. Having said that, you should have a car so you can go and explore all the beaches and small villages nearby. Finally, what surprised us most were the hosts Evangelia, Nikos and their daughter Irini. They are genuinely good people and they make your stay unforgettable. They also run a small restaurant just for the guests of Scala apartments. Evangelia cooks 2 or 3 different meals every day with the freshest ingredients. When i complemented her on her cooking she just replied that "I cook for my family first, so the ingredients have to be the best". I think that sums up their attitude towards their guests. They make you feel part of the family. Through this review I would like to thank them again for an amazing time and for cooking some special dishes for my pregnant wife. Thanks again guys, it was fantastic.

Scala apartments offer a pleasant alternative to the typical tourist traps.
Comfortable, clean, quiet accommodation in a most beautiful environment.
Hosts Evangelia and Nikos are the perfect hosts, with nothing being too much trouble.
The meals cooked by Evangalia are traditional, tasty, and generous, and are a much better alternative to the local tavernas.
The nearby beaches are unspoilt, and not populated by swarms of tourists, searching for a spot on the sand.
Located about 20 minute drive south of Naxos, i would recommend hiring a car, which would also let you explore the rest of the island.
Once again a little piece of paradise on a beautiful island.

Skala was perfect in every way. The studio apartments are spacious and clean, with charming balconies. The water pressure excellent in the shower, plenty of plugs for notepads, phones and camera chargers. It is situated in the country, a pleasant walk from the beach of Kastraki, but centrally located for those who want to explore the islands beaches, villages and mountains by car. One thing I loved about Skala is that you feel you are in the middle of nowhere, and yet you are just behind one of Greece's most beloved tavernas; Axiotissa AND we were so thrilled to realize that Evangellia and Niko's mother are excellent cooks as well. I had the best Kaltsounas (Cretan cheese pies) I have ever had at Skala, and Evangellia actually taught me how to make them one morning during our stay. We are vegetarians and they accommodated our dietary needs in the most delicious way, we found ourselves dining at Skala's kitchen nearly every night. I cannot recommend this place enough. They are such a lovely family and made us feel so at home, pampered and relaxed.

I've never spent the time to write a review before, but this is totally worth it! We had the most wonderful time there, and would definitely suggest it to anyone looking for genuine hospitality. Nikos and Evangelia made sure everything was as it should always be when you're on vacation: cozy, care-free and full of fun!

A place that you will never forget. Happy people with a lot of interestings, helpfull with many suggestions about the island exploration. Quiet place full of trees and flowers (maybe the most green place on the area), nice and very clean rooms and of course the food on the small taverna.
Ask for your favorite recipe and they will prepare it for you.
I agree with all the revies that i read here.
See you next summer Scala family.
Marie

Room Tip: All the rooms have nice verandas and a lot of privacy.
