“Lucas was amazing”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 12, 2011

We recently stayed at the Duke of Ickham for four nights and had a splendid stay made all the better for Luca and his hospitality he was wonderful and his breakfast was something to write about we are from the North but the black pudding in the South is definately something to write about. It was a little noisy but no more than we expected it is a pub after all and not a hotel. the staff were very pleasant Sarah greeted us on arrival and showed us to our room and was very helpful. the staff could not do enough with regards to extra tea bags milk coffee etc... you only had to ask. I will definately be staying there again. We were looking for property in the area and managed to find one and we will definately be back for their sunday roast.once we move down there, It was splendid atmosphere and the locals were great would definately recommend thanks again to all the staff and a special thank you to Lucas you are a credit to the Duke keep up the good work.

2 of 5 stars Reviewed December 9, 2010

When we arrived on the first night, we were shown to our room, and the gentleman spent a considerable amount of time running throught the various breakfast rules and advised that although I was suffering from a migraine, we could only eat in the bar,not in the room . The room was very cosy, and very clean (although only 1 teabag- minor point!),but very noisy.

The following morning we had breakfast, and chatted with the waiter about the wedding that we were attending that day, explaining that we were wedding planners who were organising the event. Later that morning, I called the B&B, and explained that a wedding guest had failed to secure accommodation - the staff member referred to me by name and booked in the guest.

We arrived back at the B&B at 1am to find that we were locked out (in the snow). We buzzed, knocked, telephoned until 2am to no avail, and so had nowhere to stay, and were unable to access our belongings, including my husbands anti-epileptic medication.

We returned on the Sunday morning, packed our things and on the way out a female staff member spoke to us. We explained what had happend and her response was "well what do you expect we're a pub not a hotel, you should of asked for a key". We suggested that the man reviewing the breakfast rules at length to us on the first night ought to have told us about this, or that the waiter we had spoken to about our plans at breakfast to which we were told "he is only catering its nothing to do with him". I then also reminded her of our conversation on the Saturday when I said I was at the wedding and another guest needed accommodation also - and so she could have mentioned it at this point, she said "yes well that guest has been complaining this morning that he was kept up with the phone ringing and people knocking at the door, you shouldn't have knocked you should have pressed the buzzer".

We phoned, we knocked, we buzzed, and if being locked out in the middle of the kent countryside at -6 degrees in snow, wasn't bad enough the response merely added insult to injury.

We thought we would add the first review for this establishment after a recent stay there. We were only there one night but thoroughly enjoyed our time there and were made to feel very welcome, good food and very clean rooms. We were pleasantely surprised with how clean and fresh the rooms were and had a fantastic bathroom with huge shower.
The only down side to the room itself was the noise from the bar. We were in room 1 and if you were wanting to spend some of your evening in the room it was very hard to relax or watch some TV because of the noise from the music in the bar. We had to turn the TV up quite loud to hear it over the music....when we went down for breakfast, we could see why! The speaker was up in the far corner of the bar area, right underneath our room. In fact at breakfast we heard the music more in our room than we did from the bar area! This was quite a downside as if you are needing an early night, you couldn't sleep (without earplugs) until the bar had finished and the staff had gone home. The following morning the music was back on at breakfast, so at a weekend could end up in a very late night and an early rise in the morning. This may be a genuine problem that the staff weren't aware of but for us was quite an issue and may put us off staying there at a weekend for example.
Apart from this we would use the B and B again and had a comfortable stay.
