...(it didn't help that I was still trudging around the streets of midtown Hartford close to 1 a.m. due to a flight that arrived at 11:50 p.m. from L.A. and Chicago Midway—we had delays at LAX), this place was actually a little slice of heaven and immaculate—especially for the $99 rate my group obtained!

Having just dealt with 27 degrees F outside, I felt the facility's central heating was just right (not too hot, not too cold...and I generally experience the former). I'm sure another part of the temperature modulation comes from The Goodwin's lathe and plaster walls (a DISTINCT advantage of an older building), which also provides stellar soundproofing.

Front desk staff was quite helpful, genuinely happy to see those of us who finally checked in during the wee hours! Throughout my two-day stay, drivers got my rental SUV in and out of valet parking in no time.

I'm hoping that The Goodwin's $12 million renovation is just one part of a larger revitalization effort downtown Hartford desperately needs!

I did not actually stay at this hotel this time, but I had to write a review about the cancellation experience.

On 7/16 I reserved a room on the hotel’s site at the AAA rate with a cancel before 4PM day prior rule for the rate.

At 10A.M., the day before, I cancelled via the hotel’s site and received a prompt confirmation email from the hotel at 11:30 A.M.

To my surprise, the following month I found a charge on my credit card statement for the night.

This review is about my call to them today to correct this.

I was forwarded to the appropriate person who was courteous but firmly (mis)informed me that the hotel had a 24 hour cancellation policy. I told her that I had cancelled the day before and that the rate stated I had until 4P.M. the day before and in fact, I had cancelled in the morning, hours before the deadline. She still firmly insisted, and even went on to say the website was wrong!

When I asked what time is check-in, she said 3 P.M. and I said then 24 hours is 3 P.M. the day before. Although she assured me she would credit me, she insinuated throughout that they were doing me a favor when they are not!

I have stayed here before (3/03) and it is a gorgeous hotel and service was great, worthy of Leading Hotels status, but today’s experience left a sour taste.

A luxury hotel it isn't...old, beat-up furniture, bland decor, smelly AC vent, old bathroom in need of renovations. Needs new carpet and new linens.

Staff were good, valet parking was handy.

Dear Sir/Madam,

I want to apologize that our facility failed to meet your expectation and wish to thank you for your kind comments about the staff.

The good news! After a year of planning and design, the Goodwin's $12,000,000 renovation is scheduled to begin on March 3, 2008. No surface of the hotel will remain un-touched. Each guestroom and all public areas will receive a complete renovation. We have just completed a model room so our guests can see what the renovation has in store: 32" Flat panel TV's in High Definition, Jack Packs to connect your laptop, Ipod or other electronics to the TV, Luxury glass-enclosed showers with dual heads and natural stone, In-room safes, mini-bars, coffee makers, 330 tread count Egypian cotton bedding, Molton Brown amenities, all new everything, etc., etc.

I hope you will continue to stay with us and watch the transformation.

Very Truly Yours,

Chris Barstein, General Manager

This was my second stay at the Goodwin. It is a lovely old building and very conveniently located. The staff is also very good.

The rooms, however, are getting awfully tired. On my most recent trip, my room had worn carpets, dated fixtures and wallpaper (in the bathroom) straight out of 1979. More on the bathroom: the tile floor and bathtub were both terribly dated and seemingly had permanent stains.

One last odd thing was that my mattress was appreciably smaller than my bed frame.

My husband had stayed at the Goodwin a year or two ago on business and enjoyed the accommodations and service. So when we needed a place to stay after an area concert, we booked a room there. From the moment we gave our car to the valet to the moment we retrieved it, the service was SUPERB. Every person we interacted with was professional, polite and extremely helpful and knowledgeable. While the room was a good size and the bathroom large, the decor and carpeting could use some updating. Still, for the amount we paid, we thought the hotel a good value. Also, the buffet breakfast at Pierpont's was excellent and the service also above average. We will definitely stay at the Goodwin again and highly recommend it.
