“A few really nice pieces, a lot of grim paintings”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 17, 2013

Not too shabby a museum for a local venue. Some of the best Paul Manship sculptures anywhere, plus some of the most ghastly oil paintings this side of the Atlantic. Still, it tries hard to offer something for everybody, even if the somethings are only second- or third-rate works by the masters or near-masters. Worth a trip every once in a while.

“Nice collection and exhibit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 11, 2013

Went to Hartford, CT to visit the Wadsworth Atheneum for the first time. Founded by Daniel Wadsworth of prominent Hartford family in 1842. Drawn by the current exhibit, Burst of Light, Caravaggio and His Legacy. 5 Caravaggio’s, St. Francis of Assisi in Ecstasy, Martha and Mary Magdelen, Salome Receives the Head of St. John the Baptist, The Denial of St. Peter and Saint John the Baptist, and 30 paintings by his followers, the Caravaggisti. Good chance to see some paintings that most people will never have an opportunity to see. The St. Francis is sweet but the John the Baptist is dominent. The museum has a nice collection of European and American painting but I really loved their diverse abstract, impressionist and modern collection including some decorative arts. My favorites were the O’Keefe Clam Shell, Warhol’s Jackie, the Magrittes, a Pollock and several Calder including Praying Mantis. Hudson River School is well represented with Cole, Church and Bierstadt. Café has reasonable prices, decent food and a liquor license. Free docent tours daily.

I've seen several art exhibits here and it is really a good place to take in the views of artists local and world wide. Take your time and have a great visit viewing and learning about art.

“Superb Art Museum”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 9, 2013

The Atheneum is one of the premier medium-sized art museums in the area. Their collection of Hudson River School art and artists is excellent. The collection in the museum is quite broad, ranging from ancient sculpture through modern painting and almost everything in between. If you're an art enthusiast, put it on your don't miss list if you're in the area.
