Description: The Jovial Sailor pub in Ripley, Woking has all the character and charm of a traditional English pub. Situated on the outskirts of the village of Ripley we are just 5 minutes from junction 10 of the M25. The Jovial Sailor offers great value lunch and evening deals as well as Sunday roasts and dedicated food nights and ever changing special. We pride ourselves on being 'pub restaurants' in the best sense of both words, real pubs with a comprehensive range of wines and cask ales, but with the space, atmosphere and quality of food that make them ideal locations for any occasion, whether it be a family get together, a special celebration, a great value meal out when you don't feel like cooking, or even just a drink with friends. We are a child friendly pub and are pleased to welcome all the family. To make your family time with us more enjoyable, we are pleased to provide for your use, baby changing facilities and highchairs.

We visited for lunch on Saturday, having left the nearby pub The Achor fearing it was too busy - what a mistake!

We were not shown to a table on arrival, so unfortunately sat in the area without table service. We ordered at the bar, but our first choice, the wild boar burger, was not available which they didn't tell us. In its place we ordered the rump burger 'medium rare' to be told it's not actually cooked to order as it's a 'pattie'. The menu says all grills come with 'onion rings', but my husbands rump burger came with just one (small) onion ring. We checked the menu and questioned it, to which we were told they only ever serve one onion ring. It was just strange.
We also ordered a side of carrots, which came in a bowl with sauce smeared on the edges.
In general, the food was fine, and presentation poor.
Positively, the waitress behind the bar was friendly and helpful.
Sorry, by we won't be coming back.

“Felt SOOO uncomfortable.. never again!!!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed March 5, 2014

So it looks like the old Manager has left?!? Well he definatly wasn't there when we went! The new Manager.. what an absolute joke! We thought we would have a quick ciggarette outside before entering the pub for dinner and a few drinks. We lit our ciggarette and the Manager comes and ID's us... ID for a ciggie are you serious?!? Anyway he then said he would reserve us a table... we went in and guess what? No table reserved stood there awkwardly like idiots next to him why he had a casual chat with other members of staff!!!! He then turned round and looked at us and we asked about our table. He hadn't reserved one at all... so he went looking for one! Why we waited we ordered a bottle of house white.. which was Hardy's (Which was ok)! However cost us £17.00 for a bottle of house wine (Its cheaper in the pubs down the road)!!! He then showed us to our table where we got IDed AGAIN!!!! By this time we were all getting very annoyed. We then sat down and a polite waitress served us.. no problems with her at all to be honest! Only problem was didn't get offered more drinks throughout our meal... you'd think they would want our money. Personally I think they just wanted us to leave. The worst thing about the whole meal is the staff staring at us throughout.... We didn't stay for Desert we went to The Talbot down the road for Desert and Wine! Much nicer place!!!! Would not go back here for food or even a drink!!!!!! Maybe Head Office need to get The Jovial a new Manager!!

“Nice place for a beer”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 3, 2014

Stopped here on the way back from Guildford as I remember going here a couple of times when it was under another name (Wheatsheaf perhaps). There was a beer festival/promotion on and there were four nice ones on. As I am also a Camra member I got 10% off too.

“Don't waste your money!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed February 15, 2014 via mobile

The staff didn't smile at all- a man and 2 ladies serving at the front gave the impression of not wanting to be there. The Mac 'n' Cheese was just sheets of pasta in a cheap tasting cheese sauce , tomatoes and butternut squash- very tasteless. A lady eventually cleared away main plates and asked if we wanted desserts. I informed her that we had already ordered and paid for desserts. She then commented that our plates should have been cleared away prior to desserts. The service was appalling so after a long wait between the starter and main and then the main and dessert, I told the same lady behind the bar that the service was appalling and all I got was 'We are short-staffed in the kitchen but I will chase your desserts'. No apology, nothing. One dessert then arrived and I had to remind them that we had ordered 2 desserts. I will never eat there again yet years ago, it was a lovely place to eat. This experience has completely put me off Chef and Brewers.

“Good pub but hard to impress in Surrey”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 3, 2014

Always nice, it is my work local so the menu has got a little tired. With a whole host of up market pub/restaurants in the area it is hard to stand out from the competition. Still, the Jovial is a fairly reliable mid-level Surrey watering hole.
