This past weekend me and my husband decided to take a little weekend trip to Boston. Along the way we decided to stop over in Connecticut at the Foxwood's Casino. The only hotel we found in the area that did not charge an arm and a leg was the Super 8 Motel. I had read the two previous reviews and I had my doubts about this place but we decided to give it a try.
I was suprised to find the bed in our room to be as big as it was. The sheets and blankets were very clean and so was the bathroom. I was a little disappointed at the fact the toilet was missing the toilet seat cover, usually I would leave my clothes on there when I take a shower. I was also pleased with the free continental breakfast they provided for us that following morning. Overall I would definately return to this Super 8 for our future trips to the two nearby casinos.
My wife and I recently stayed at the Super 8 in Groton, CT and found it to be nothing like the review from teachernthehood. I came across this review while looking for the Super 8's number to book another night's stay with them in 2 weeks when we make a Mohegan Sun detour during our ski trip to Maine.
We found this Super 8 to be a lot cleaner than most of the other road side motels we've had the displeasure of staying at and most importantly, it felt safe. Its located on a main road and was conveniently close to some stores and fast food chains, so that made it easy for us to grab some quick food after we checked in. Though our interaction with the staff was limited, they seemed friendly and the front desk got us promptly checked into a non-smoking room. We also didn't have any problems getting a late checkout. I'm an early bird, so while my wife was sleeping, I went down for their complimentary breakfast and found 2 fresh trays of bagels and pastries. I had a croissant with some coffee and it didn't taste stale or any different than other places. I brought a bagel back for my wife and she didn't have any problems eating it. As for all the noise, what noise? We had our tv on and fell asleep right after turning it off.
I felt propelled to write this review because from my experience, I think the other review was quite harsh and borderline exaggeration. We plan on staying here again and wouldn't want everyone to only have one person's experience to base their decision on. In the end, it is what it is. We wouldn't stay at any Super 8 motel if we were expecting 5 star accomidations, but we got a good night's sleep at a reasonable price. I would recommend this Super 8 if you ever need a place to stay near Groton, CT.
We decided to go to Groton at the last minute, and found the places where we usually stayed to be either booked up or too pricey. We ended up here because it was the least expensive available with rooms available. This should in no way intimate that the rate was low. We paid eighty bucks a night, and it wasn’t even worth half that.
First off, although this motel is located on a main road, it is difficult to find at night because their sign is set far back from the road. They are surrounded by many other neon sign lit places, such as Taco Bell (you could almost order from your room window), KFC, Hollywood Video, etc. Lovely view. We heard several people complain about driving around lost looking for this hole.
Although their were two men on staff behind the desk, only one actually worked, while the other fussed with the brochure display in the lobby. It didn’t matter that the line was long for so late at night (about nine), and the people on the line were getting restless.
When we finally got to our third floor room, we were horrified and disgusted. There were no basic amenities, like shampoo, just a couple of tiny, aging bars of soap in the bathroom. We have stayed in some dumps before, but they at least had coffee makers in the rooms. Not here. You had to traverse the building to the lobby if you wanted a cup of coffee. But just have one cup, and your thirst will be cured, as their coffee was so weak it looked like dirty water. Stick with the tea.
The room was pretty nasty, with old carpet, furniture, and linens. The upholstered desk chair was stained, and we were afraid to sit on it. The bedspreads were ancient and faded, and the blankets, well, we ran to the car and got the one we keep there for emergencies.
The ice “bucket” in the room didn’t even have a lid. At first we were glad that the ice machine was near our room. That was until we realized that we could hear everything going on out in the hall, as the doors are pretty high off the floor. Because the fourth floor machine didn’t work, we had the added bonus of listening to people from another floor fill their buckets. All night long. And it wasn’t even the tap of the ice falling into the “buckets” that was so loud, but rather the whir of the ancient ice machine.
I suppose we should have paid closer attention upon check-in when that one man angrily demanded his money back from the motel.
The continental breakfast was deadly. Luckily, while putting cream cheese on the last bagel left (at nine in the morning), I noticed the green that was being pulled from the bagel by the cream cheese. One whiff told me I had a molder! That was my last attempt at their “breakfast,” which consisted of old, stale bagels, a few stale cinnamon things (I saw people throwing them out), juice drinks, disgusting coffee and tea.
Additionally, the quality of clientele this hellhole attracts is really interesting. We heard many arguments and challenges to fights in the middle of the night. Then there were the two females who drove up to each other in front of the entrance (where our windows were), and proceeded to have a vociferous dialogue, as their slurred words wafted across Route 12.
If visiting the Groton/Mystic area, and you are on a tight budget, there are plenty of really nice places that give you so much more for so much less. Namely, the Red Roof Inn, and the VIP Flagship (our favorite in the area). Just be sure to book early when there will be better availability. But whatever you do, don’t stay here.
