3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 20, 2013

If every hotel were a 5-star, many of us would have no place to stay. Many travelers and many occasions require only the basics. The Groton Super 8 provides those basics.

My wife and I stayed here for two nights for $101.

LOCATION: Located just off Interstate 95, the hotel is near shopping centers and restaurants. Mohegan Sun is 20 minutes away, Foxwoods about 30.

THE ROOM:
The room with two double beds is a decent size so that a couple won’t bump into each other.
The room contained a hair dryer and clock. The clock, however, was not situated beside the bed, but rather rested on the TV. If you want to use it as an alarm clock, you have to move the desk between the beds [it’s easy to move] away from the wall and plug in the clock. There is no outlet on the desk itself..

There were two large drawers and a pole for hanging clothes. The room contains a chair, the aforementioned desk, and a desk chair. The plug behind the desk has two sockets, one of which is used for the lamps so you have one socket left for your computer[s] and the clock.

USA Today is included in the room price and is available in the lobby.

The wi-fi was as slow as dial-up. Two staff members explained that when the hotel is crowded, the wi-fi becomes slow.

The TV was not a flat screen. We didn’t watch TV so I can’t comment on the quality.

The room-lighting was bright. The room does not contain a nightlight.

The shower spray is steady and the hot water remains constant. The shower is a shower/bath combination.

The bathroom has minimal counter space and is not well-lighted, but was clean. The towels are plentiful and although not plush, certainly do the job.

Housekeeping was okay, but they knocked on our door at 9:50 AM even though the DO NOT DISTURB sign was up.

The bed, pillow, and linens were comfortable [This is subjective, of course. One guest’s “comfortable” can be another guest’s sleepless night.].

The heater worked very well; my wife, however, is a light sleeper and had to turn it off all night because she said it made noise when cycling ON/OFF

ELEVATORS: There is only one elevator. It’s only a 4-floor hotel so we had no unusually long waits. But the problem is obvious. Elevators can break and certainly require routine maintenance. What do guests do when the elevator is invariably out of service? For some guests the stairs are not an option.

STAFF: The staff is a major selling point for the hotel. In a word: excellent. They are pleasant, helpful, and accommodating. They respond to requests quickly

INTERNET ACCESS: If you don’t have your computer with you, the hotel provides a computer near the front desk. The cost is included in the price of the room. However, it’s on the same wi-fi that I mentioned earlier.

FOOD: Guests have access to a buffet breakfast, which is built into the price of the room. It’s meager, but given the price of the room, you can’t really complain. Juice, bread, cold cereal, coffee, tea, hot chocolate, pre-packaged cinnamon rolls, and waffles are all available self-serve in a small dining room off the lobby. There is no attendant. The person at the front desk will refill supplies on request.

SUMMARY: The Groton Super 8 is fine for a short stay where price and location are more important than frills. It doesn’t try to be anything more. It succeeds in the niche that it fills. If you’re looking for more pampering, more frills, and more cost, you’re within a half mile of a Hilton Garden Inn, a Hampton Inn, and a Best Western.
