“Cheap rate for a reason.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 3, 2012 via mobile

My wife and I and another couple stayed here due to its relative proximity to Mohegan and its rates. It's been probably 20 something years since I've last used this icon. Unfortunately it seems it's been at least that long since this hotel made any changes or upgrades to its decor. Seriously, I think all the original carpets, wall paper and mattresses are still being used. Clean? That depends on your standards. I didn't see trash or body parts, but I still don't know what kind of bug that was swimming in the toilet; and I'm hoping it wasn't a curly wurly on the bed. The bathroom however, was a no-go. No one dared take a shower in the morning. We stayed in a smoking room so I guess that would explain the burn holes in the thin blankets. Two matresses and a box spring and still no support. I got a little sentimental cuz those mattresses brought me back to my military days.

Look, this place is no frills. I've been in worse but not by much. It's 12 or so miles from Mohegan and a little over $100. If I'm a 20 something year old on a budget, ya I'll stay here. Me? Never again. A family? You might want to spring for the extra money and look elsewhere.

“TERRIBLE!!!!!! DIRTY & BUG INFESTED!!!!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed August 24, 2011

My small group immediately were disgusted by the smells lingering in the corridors. When we entered our rooms cobwebs and roaches in the rooms. One of our couples found live 3 bed-bugs on top of the sheets just below the bed spread. When management was confronted with the discoveries they called us liers and started insulting us with racial slurs.

“A little quirky, and off the beaten path, but an average place to stay”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 18, 2011

We booked a room through Booking.com at a different property, but there was a problem, and Booking.com arranged for our reservation to be switched to the Howard Johnson while we were en route. Knowing it was a holiday weekend, we didn't have much choice, so that's what brought us here. I read the reviews on Tripadvisor later and would say that the property is on the older side and a bit quirky, but there was nothing really wrong with it. Our room was on the 2nd floor. There is no elevator and it is a small hotel. All the rooms open onto one long, long hallway. There was free wifi and our bedroom (a double/double) was pretty large. The breakfast was mediocre and when we went down, the room (a converted bedroom) was terribly crowded. The front desk people were very nice and helpful.

I would not seek out to stay there again, but for one night it was satisfactory.

“Nice hotel, negative reviews are uncalled for!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 19, 2011

We came to the Howard Johnson because we were going to Foxwoods for the weekend. At check in, the gentlemen was very polite. He was one of the nicest people I have ever met while checking into a hotel. He asked us over and over again if we needed directions anywhere, explained the area very well, and made sure that our request for more pillows was completed. He also informed us that a brand new bed had just been placed in our room. The bed was great. The room was your basic hotel room. There was a fridge, microwave, mini coffee pot, safe, couch, table, tv, etc. I will admit, there were a few burn marks on the carpet and you could tell someone had dropped a hot iron on the floor once. The microwave was very old, but honestly, who uses the microwave at a hotel. The A/C/Heater worked great. The room did have an older look to it, but for $48 a night (over the weekend) what do you expect. The Howard Johnson is a place that you get what you pay for. If you're looking for a 5 star hotel, with all the extra's don't stay here. If you are looking for a low price place to stay for a few days, it is great. I will admit on the 3rd night we could hear other people next door to us. Once again, you get what you pay for. The last night there the vending machine outdoors ate my money and I spoke with the man at the front desk. He was polite enough to give me a soda from his own personal fridge. The problem with a lot of people at hotels is that if you treat the staff poorly, they will treat you poorly. I established a great relationship with the front desk staff and they made our stay feel like we were at a 5 star resort. I would recommend this hotel to anyone. Anyone that truly gives a bad review here probably expected to be staying at a 5 star hotel. Once again, you get what you pay for. Whenever we make trips to foxwoods again, we will be staying here. As far as people saying there is a bad odor, I would disagree. I didn't smell anything while being at the hotel. Could the rooms be upgraded, yes, but you would pay a lot more then what you pay now. I also read how people were complaining about breakfast. They have bagels, toast, cereal, donuts, juice, milk, coffee. Overall, I give this place a fantastic review because of the great staff and the price at which you pay.

Room Tip: Establish a relationship with the front staff.
