“What A Difference Two Years Make”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed June 19, 2012

Two years ago we discovered Costello's Clam Shack, the clams were good and the fish sandwich exceptional. The menu describes their fish sandwich as a "Plum Center Cut of North Atlantic Cod, Batter Fried and served on a toasted roll". The sandwich two years ago was just that, a plump, very, very fresh, large piece of Cod, cooked to perfection. It was served on a Kaiser Roll and was such a large portion of fish it stuck out from the edges of the roll, a very hearty sandwich indeed. I waited two years to go back to Costello's to have another of those magnificent fish sandwiches. To my dismay what I was served this time was a triangular, commercially purchased, thick battered, frozen fish filet which did not even cover the hamburger bun it was served on (no more kaiser rolls). I asked if there were different types of fish sandwiches to choose from, figuring maybe I had made a mistake, No, that was the only fish sandwich they offered. How disappointing.

“Be casual while watching the fancy folk come and go...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 12, 2012

This is a great place to enjoy freshly prepared seafood by the water. Nothing fancy here - fried or steamed clams, scallops and others while you sit at picnic tables and watch the yachts come and go. Enjoy the fresh air and BYOB.

“Beautiful views ...just OK seafood”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 17, 2011

We visited Costellos on a beautiful sunny August day about 2 PM. We have been to Abbott's next door many times and really don't get all the hype. Maybe it's because we have so many options for a great lobster that we find Abbott's over rated.

So after deciding to give Costellos a try, we walk up to the window view the menu and order. We had an order of fish & chips and a scallops and chips. We easily found a table right at the railing in the covered upper decking. On such a beautiful day, this view would be hard to match! The food is cooked to order and took about 10 minutes to come up.

The scallops were varied sizes, about 10-12 for 12.99. They were just ok.
The fish was disappointing. It was batter dipped and not all white fish which is what I expect in a New England fish and chip dinner. There were two large portions and lots of fries along with a small coleslaw for 11.99.

I personally wouldn't return though the view is great. There are just so many other better seafood options along the CT/RI coast.
