Chester's is located in the Big Y shopping plaza w/ an interior corner location so it tends to get lost a bit in the suburban blitz but it has quietly become our favorite barbecue restaurant in the area. Quiet because we have now eaten there 5-6 times and I think I'm ready to review it as it a local, consistently high rated restaurant.
We typically go there as a family w/ a lot of friends and they have the room to spread out as they have two fairly large size rooms. looks almost like a take-our counter that you walk up to, place your order, sit down w/ the drinks and they call your number.
We go for the platters or the large, bulky sandwiches and for us, it's the fall off the bone tenderness that does it for us w/ the combo pork, ribs and/or chicken. The spices are well ingrained and the sauces are separate so my son who loves the meat but not a lot of sauce can co-exist w/ his sister who likes the ribs to drip sauces.
The kids also like it because you can go for refills throughout the whole meal by yourself. It used to be a BYOB which we liked but when they got their liquor license, it's no big deal as their beer is well-priced so I spend a bit more, but drink a bit less.
The other night we went it, they had a music group playing and it was just a good night of lively, fun Mystic style music in an eatery developing into a local institution while sipping a few beers. A nice night in Groton/Mystic.
