Two guests from the UK choose to stay at the J House, the hotel where Eleven 14 is located. To make things easy, we decided to have dinner in the hotel at Eleven 14. I should have known how the evening was going to go when I asked the young lady at the front desk two questions - one seemed to be the permissible limit. The attitude at the front desk runs right thru the place. Arrogant, indifferent, unprofessional.
There is nothing like starting out the evening by being "greeted" by a remarkably impolite bartender. It took way too long to be recognized, the conversation she was having was far too important apparently to break away and offer a drink. "Well, do you have a tab or a credit card open?" "Well, no..." You would think it pretty obvious since I have been waving my arms and there is no drink in front of me.
The hostess could care less that we were waiting; she stood with her foot up against a piece of furniture. Begrudgingly, she walked us to our table.
The menu was unimpressive, as was the food. The Dover Sole at $65 is a joke. I know what it costs, and there is no justification. The pasta, particularly the "lasagna" was bland and sloppy.
The Dover Sole (yes, I ordered it anyway!) was fine, but not worth $65 by any means. The side dishes were totally forgettable. The service was attentive and polite. Thankfully the nice young man waiting on us had not been infected yet by some of the others.
The evening, other than the very fine company of my two guests, was disappointing.
If you are looking for a "ten", don't go to Eleven 14.
Best Wishes, Colin A. Burns
