My wife and I selected the Best Western Black Rock Inn due to its’ proximity to Fairfield University, where our son was attending a Lacrosse Camp. I called the hotel directly and saved about $30 off of the best Internet rate that I could find. Check-in was effortless, and the room was ready earlier than promised.
The front desk staff were younger, and seemed to be in training or new to the job. However, they were friendly and as helpful as they could be. When we asked for a recommendation for a restaurant overlooking the ocean, the young women at the desk were stumped. The manager gave us a few recommendations, and took the time to pull up menus on the Internet when he found out that my wife had an allergy to seafood. On his recommendation we ate at Acqua in Westport, and loved it.
Our room was a King, non-smoking at the end of the hall on the second floor. It was big enough for us and had a small fridge that was convenient. The bed was firm but comfortable. The pillows were a bit overstuffed and firm for us. The room was clean and the linens were fresh. The bath was clean, but had a little bit of a sour odor that we attributed to housekeeping not changing the water often enough in a mop bucket. A word to management about that (at the end of our stay) was well-received with a promise that it would be acted on.
We’re used to a large selection of television channels at home, whereas the hotel had 28 channels. They did have one HBO channel, as well as the major networks and a varied assortment of cable channels. We had an older Cathode Ray TV that could have used a color adjustment, but there are flat panels available in the hotel. It was just fine for the night. We found a decent movie on the free channels, and fell fast asleep before we even thought of looking at the pay movies.
A breakfast bar was included in the room rate. It was convenient and well organized. I had a fresh made waffle that was tasty, and was made for me by the woman who tends to the breakfast bar. The coffee was good too. There were assorted cereals, yogurts, muffins, bagels and breads as well. It was perfect for a quick fix to hold us over to lunch.
If you don’t have a laptop to take advantage of the free hard-wired Internet access in the room or the Wi-Fi in the lobby, you can still get on line. There is a public computer in an area toward the rear of the lobby. It’s attached to a color printer. The use of the computer is included in the room rate, and there is no cost to print. We were able to receive a contract via e-mail, and eliminate a few pages with a full version of Adobe Acrobat that is installed on the computer, before sending it on. The USB port on the front of the machine is enabled, and we used our memory stick to save the document to it.
We found the location to be convenient, easy to find, and the perfect distance from the university. We were thinking of staying at the Hilton Garden Inn in Norwalk, but were so glad that we didn’t. It would have cost us twice the price, and the traffic between Fairfield & Norwalk was very congested due to road maintenance. Also, the convenience of being five minutes between venues can’t be understated, especially when you’re back and forth to the hotel more than once a day.
Overall, the Best Western Black Rock Inn was a great choice for us – not a luxury accommodation – but certainly a nice clean and comfortable place to stay, and a good value to boot!
