“Gives honor to Sushi”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 21, 2012

This place is top notch. The service is great, the owner is always there. We love the Nanami Special Roll - little crispy warm bits on top of best catch sushi omg! The drinks are fun and there's always a small crowd at the sushi bar when we go. Plus, they have those private dining booths which are so swanky. Love it.

“Caution: Fish is not fresh.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed October 28, 2010

We are frequent sushi/sashimi consumers, as we have two young children who love sashimi. But please order with caution. The color, texture and odor of our sushi and sashimi were clear indicators that the meal was going to be disastrous. We should have heeded the first warning, and that was a, for the most part, deserted restaurant. And when we sent the food back, we were personally and publically chastised by the chef and his wife, before the 3 guests that were present and in front of my very young children, though we had every intention to pay for the inedible meal. Perhaps you will enjoy better luck if you order from the cooked menu. If you are willing to travel further south on I-95, Hanami in Clinton is superb. Also, Japanica II, off of Route 9 in Middletown is worth a visit.

“Uni - not so much”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 22, 2009

We ate at Nanami on 11/22/2009. We're experienced sushi consumers, typically eating
at Japanese restaurants in NYC and Boston areas. Overall impression of Nanami was
that is was much worse than our normal sushi (Kotobuki) restaurant on Long Island.
We typically order Uni as our indicator dish - here is was basically inedible, one could
tell just looking at it that this was going to be extremely poor, and it was. Red clam
sashimi tasted awful, and again, the visual cue gave us fair warning. Sweet shrimp
had some weird taste, not briny or spoiled, but definitely not fresh. High point was
black tobiko (how can anyone mess that up) and the soft shell crab & ponzu sauce. Japanese pickles were excellent, perhaps the best example of oshinko that we've had.
All in all, negative overall food quality. Given the soft shell crab, this may be a place
where you prefer cooked dishes to sushi. Our experience with sushi has been that
it's best to seek out restaurants that are very busy since this forces management to
turn over their fish quickly. In the case of Nanami the tip off for us should have been
the relative desolation when we visited. Keep looking, there has to be decent sushi
somewhere in the New London area.

“Excellent Sushi”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 27, 2009

The Sushi here is unquestionably the best in the area. Unfortunately I can't in good conscience give a 5/5 because, like many asian restaurants, Nanami has very odd hours and closes for a good section of the afternoon.
