“Don't bother eating inside.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed December 2, 2012

The food is nothing special. Go in the summer and get a burger on the patio with a view of the river. Don't expect very good service.

“Hit the deck!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 29, 2012

The outdoor dining is wonderful, the food is just novel enough to keep your interest and consistently good. Go when there's not a s how on next door for better atmosphere.

“Lovely setting, decent food”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 26, 2012

We went to Geltson House to celebrate my birthday with friends before heading over to the Goodspeed Opera. The setting is lovely and the view is very nice. The atmosphere is very appropriate to the location but is not stuffy at all. The food was good, but not great. The spices used on the steak were a little strange. The appetizer options were a little on the boring side. Desserts were very good. All in all, I would certainly return.

“Go for the view - but only if they've got a buffet”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed October 22, 2012

This is one of Connecticut's historic treasures, started as an inn about 150 years ago. Situated on the banks of the Connecticut River adjacent to the equally historic Goodspeed Opera House the views from the dining room are great all year, spectacular in spring and fall. Encouraged by a pretty good brunch buffet for Mother's Day we undertook a late fall drive down along the river hoping for the same yesterday, Oct. 21. Although the buffet was not available we were seated by a window overlooking the river. The good experience stopped here. We were presented with a menu which featured only the dinner options, which weren't good for people with a strong vegetarian preference. We both settled on shrimp Scampi,"Served in a Bed of Spinach Fettuccini with Garlic White Wine, Parsley and Fresh Tomatoes $23.99". The concept is good - the bright coral of shrimp against the pale green of the fettucini, enlivened by garlic, parsley and a wine-and-butter sauce. What we got was undercooked fettucini (no, it was not al dente) and what seemed to be a half-dozen very large pre-cooked shrimp looking a bit tattered from the thawing and heating process. The bit of tomato in the dish, which might have been late season local, were pale and flavorless. There was a goodly amount of purchased-prepared garlic, which formed the only discernible flavor of the dish - parsely was not apparent. It was, to say the least, disappointing. It was not helped by seeing adjacent customers served the complimentary bread basket, which passed us by. Nor by seeing other customers served quiche or what appeared to be a take on eggs Benedict - it seems we weren't furnished the brunch menus, either. Having a waitperson come by every few minutes to see "if everything was alright" seemed less like attentive service and more like a push to finish up and let them get on with the private party which was gathering. All in all, I might return for a buffet because of the wonderful location, but count me out for anything else.
